The health department on Tuesday cautioned people travelling to countries with high rates of swine flu to be on high alert.

"The number of H1N1 cases in South Africa has decreased considerably for the last three weeks up to November 1 as no new cases got reported," spokesman Fidel Hadebe said.

Hadebe however said that on November 1, a 28-year-old pregnant woman who had travelled from Dubai was admitted to a private hospital in the Western Cape with the virus.

"The risk to contract the infection has shifted to travellers specifically to those travelling to the northern hemisphere.

"Disease activity in those parts continues to spread and increase in intensity," he said.

Hadebe said in Europe, North America and Canada, countries were reporting increased rates of Influenza-Like Illnesses with high rates of swine flu -- or pandemic H1N1 2009 virus detections.

"We would like to request travellers to these destinations to remain on high alert and exercise caution as part of minimising their risk of infection."

Hadebe said travellers should take the necessary precautions to prevent illness.

At the risk of sounding sceptical, is not more a case of the hype dying down, less people taking their flu-like symptoms for a check up? At one point I heard many doctors weren't bothering to check for swine flu and were simply prescribing the necessary just in case.

My GP did that in August when I had a flu that just didn't want to go away and really got me down. Some heavy daily drips at the local Medicross and after a week or so I was ok...

How many people died or got seriously sick from "normal" flu in the same time this H1N1 scare came out?

Said all along this virus was over rated and i could never understand why normal every year flu was killing far more but this virus was such a huge problem.

Sounded like a bunch of scare mongering to me. No doubt people died but far more people died from your average flu so i don't get the hype.

It is worth remembering that seasonal flu often poses a serious threat to public health: each year it kills 250,000 - 500,000 around the world.

Over 2800 People Worldwide Have Died From H1N1 ( LOL )

Yea i can see how everyone was running scared of h1n1, what a crock of shyte in my opinion.

Oh dear. The hype's gone because...

25-50x MORE people die from ordinary flu in a year than the fatal, deadly, killer, other deathly adjectives, SWINE flu.

Lemmings.

the thing is some scientists, just like global warming, were lying about the pandemic and this caused countries to stockpile vaccines making companies like GlaxoSmithKline millions of dollars. Now lots of companies are returning their unused vaccines.
