Hacked account

If it was a hacked account, how did they trace it to your friend?

Personally - if it was 'my friend' who did it, and I'm getting charged for it and he doesn't own up, I'd go to the police station and lay a charge against him.

A friend of mine, he knows nothing about pc's, just use e-mail, had someone stay with them for about 6 months. This person had an hacked account which he installed on my friends adsl router.

This account was used for about 3 months, Oct up to Dec, and this person pulled about 36 GB of data.

My friend now received an letter from a lawyer, an ISP is suing them for about R7500 for usage.

My question - can he be held liable for something that someone else did?

Hope someone can help me.

For some reason I dont believe that. IF it is true track down the person and get them to pay.. thats IF it true

tsk tsk tsk. so many friends involved in this story, other peoples, someone elses etc... your 'friend' is screwed Sadiver - best he comes completely clean with a lawyer before being put on the spot in the courthouse...

well for one we wouldn't have all this bull**** if we had uncapped internet, just go's to show all the problems faced with a bandwidth starved country..

Also think you would notice when someone is pulling 36GB via your DSL line.

There's no way to get rid of the lawyers letter.

So : Either your friend pays, or the "someone who stayed there" pays.

Let him decide, but getting out of it by acting stupid won't work.
When your ADSL line gets installed you get a pamphlet from Telkom saying how important it is to secure your router, because you're responsible for it.

This thread has me thinking of my own situation. I rent out rooms in my house and I have a router set to bridged mode, so that the tenants can use their own ISP accounts. If one of them uses a hacked account like this, will I be liable because my equipment was involved? To be fair, I cannot think of a way to make sure that they don't use stolen details.
