Hackers could take over the Web

Im taking it very seriously. Updating everything.

You may think you're updating, but it won't be the updates you expect. The hackers will control everything. :)

If you want to be really hardcore, start browsing using only website's IP addresses.
 
I don't quite see how they are going to fix this. If I understand w1z4rd's quoted piece correctly then the only way to fix it is to rewrite the entire DNS system and switch to a stronger key.:(
 
If anything its corporations that is trying to control the internet.. Like the way the west is conrolling oil by staging war in iraq.
 
So what to do about this? I switched to OpenDNS but I get the same message.
Thats cos browsing is transparently cached on almost all broadband services and its the cache/proxy server that does the final site lookup.

So whichever DNS servers the proxy is configured to use are the ones actually being tested.

Okay, but I don't really understand how that effects me in the end. Does that mean I am safe from this or not?

Like I posted previously, It looks like this patch, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...33-7a9e-4423-93a8-b38907467cdf&displaylang=en, linked from here, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-037.mspx, linked from this article, http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/09/dns_fix_alliance/, is the fix on XP for this issue.

So now that I have this fix applied am I safe from this whole thing or not? I was thinking earlier that I should update everything (I know you should anyway, but I don't update all that often), like browsers, firmware etc. But as this issue effects DNS what can I do about it other than that MS fix?

I think maybe someone needs to give an explanation guided towards a kind of n00b level here, please? I only know on a very basic level that DNS resolves domain names to server IP addresses, and have heard of DNS poisoning, but I think I need to know more about what's going on here to feel "safe", so any explanations or links that explain this in simple terms will be appreciated.
 
no need for anyone to worry yet, hackers have already making use of of is for years and so far nothing deadly serious has happened.

can anyone conferm if it has anything to do with your router's firmware? sure would cost alot if isp's had to recall all their routers.

Why would they need to recall them all, you can just update your firmware can't you? Like a BIOS or something.
 
yeah sorry not all of them, but do you think the majority of ppl could manage that on their own? there's some very slow ppl out there ;)

As bad as this sounds, SSL-enabled sites should be safe, right? (Just make sure the SSL certificate is being loaded and is valid.)

At least from my side, IS seems to be safe (196.26.52.131).

I downloaded the patch tuesday but am not able o open pages now does anyone have the

Do you mean the patch that I linked to? If so, I have had no problems at all.
