This. I initially did it just to play around as a project.
My components at the time weren't the easiest things to get running... Not too sure what they were but I managed after a month or two.
Installing updates was a pain and when they were done you'd hope it would still turn on
I did buy myself a Mac a few years later and loved it while I had it. Needs changed and laptop usage went down drastically so I sold it.
I installed MacOS Sierra on the following:
- Gigabyte GA-H97M-D3H motherboard
- 4690K CPU
- Gigabyte Nvidia GTX970
- 16GB RAM
- Samsung 32" TV and Dell 27" montior connected via HDMI
I used the latest versions of Unibeast and Multibeast via the Tonymac website to install. Used UEFI mode without any graphics injection.
I had to install ethernet and audio kexts via Multibeast and used Clover Configurator to setup the system definitions and serial number for an iMac 14,3 to get iMessage to work.
Everything including the above mentioned iMessage, Mac App Store, HDMI Audio, etc works. iCloud even shows that I have an iMac. Only thing still outstanding is getting Handoff working. I'm planning to order one of these soon to get the setup complete:

Nice ! Fyi, I am using a cheap BT dongle I got off eBay. Was $3 or something. Worked out of the box. No additional kexts required.
I'm gonna clone my El Cap hack drive this week as a backup and try the Upgrade to Sierra on another drive. Looks fairly simple. I'll post the results when it's done.

Getting wifi and Bluetooth working without handoff is easy. I have two el cheapo bluetooth dongles that work plug n play. Handoff requires a genuine Apple Airport card or some kext hacking. I prefer using the genuine card since it's pnp and less hassle.
Sierra was easier for me to get up and running than El Capitan. Main reason was that El Capitan was full of **** when it came to dual displays and it had issues with system definitions. Sierra on the other hand is running perfectly smooff from day one.
Good to know. I updated my MacBook Pro last week. I had some audio latency problems on one of my external interfaces. Known issue in El Cap with Core Audio, which Apple never sorted out. Completely gone in Sierra. Cool, I'm definitely gonna get on this during the course of the week.

I updated my El Capitan hackingtosh to Sierra. In place update was actually easy and smooth using clover. However something with nvidia driver and my Asus Geforce 460gtx not playing well together, having me ended up with a monitor that turns off as soon as the driver load, same with the Nvidia web driver. Tracking it down, seems its the power management driver on certain systems that does it with nvidia hardware, thinking it should fall back automatically to the onboard intel gpu...which I dont have.
Got lazy and tired of trying to fix it, now I just use my MBP as main pc at home.

Success ! Updated straight to Sierra from El Cap. Here are the steps :
1. Download the latest version of Clover
2. Mount your EFI Partition
3. Go to Clover folder and create a "10.12" folder
4. Copy kexts from "10.11" folder into "10.12" folder
5. Download Sierra from the App Store
6. Install
7. Upon Clover boot screen, select Mac OS X Install and NOT your Mac OS Boot Drive
8. Wait +/- 28 Minutes
That's it ! Successful in place upgrade. I did clone my drive to a new 500GB SSD just in case. I installed on the SSD and things are silky smooth
1. Download the latest version of Clover
2. Mount your EFI Partition
3. Go to Clover folder and create a "10.12" folder
4. Copy kexts from "10.11" folder into "10.12" folder
5. Download Sierra from the App Store
6. Install
7. Upon Clover boot screen, select Mac OS X Install and NOT your Mac OS Boot Drive

That's good news. I'm glad it worked out for you.
I updated from 10.12 to 10.12.1 and the only thing I had to do was update the Nvidia drivers. It was just a matter of opening System Preferences and using the Nvidia updater to download and install the driver. Except for the Clover boot loader on startup, it seemed like I was updating a real Mac.
Nvidia GFX *should* have native support. Have you tried booting into Safe Mode and uninstalling the Web Driver to see if that helps ?
Also have you tried "nv_disable=1 and GraphicsEnabler=No" ?

The Web driver made no difference whether it was enabled, disabled or uninstalled. Tried all 3 combinations.
With nv_disable=1 I could boot into the OS, but obviously being on the vesa driver it was hideously slow. The problem is, without getting either the native nvidia or web driver working, it was a pain.

Dont remember the name, I do remember always using the number 15,1 which I know some people reported could give issues, but at the time I had the issues after upgrading I also tried 16,1 17,1 and the MBP variants where I can't remember the numbrers offhand.
I probably could have figured it out, but perhaps I wasn't patient enough anymore. Personally I think I'd be better off with better compatible hardware, this GPU had issues from day 1, even though I got it working, it would still randomly freeze. Then when I ssh in to check the logs, the power management killed something on the GPU so the system still worked, just nothing on the screen would move or update. So I kinda knew the GPU needed a change, the upgrade just completely borked it.
Not at that the current price it's silly much
