Hair Thinning

Since I was 20 I was going bald. Now I can see only skin from my front to my crown, looking just like the Joshua Doore man.

I have considered going for hair transplant surgery, but that is crazy expensive.

I usually just shave my head, but for three weeks now I've been growing what is left of my hair.

In this time I have noticed something peculiar. The areas where I am "bald" seems to be packed with the thinnest, shortest, clear-looking hair. I have never really noticed this before as the hair is so extremely thin, but the hair is there. The follicles are not dead yet it would seem.

Now I want this thin hair to grow as they should, before they may die for good.

I know that dead follicles can never grow hair again, but my follicles are still holding on for life. I need to know if there are any real working remedies that can fully reactivate these follicles, and make them grow thick and normal once more.

I need advice. Are there any pills? Hormone treatments? Shampoos?

What are your suggestions?

I have heard about this, http://www.igrowlaser.co.za/contact/
Many moons ago I used to go for Laser Therapy, it worked like a bomb.

I've been taking finpecia (the Propecia generic) for about 10 years now. Costs around R200-R300 per month.
However, as was pointed out to me on this forum, Propecia does carry some risks, so do your research before taking it. I am lucky in that i have not experienced any side effects at all, ever.

I tried Minoxidil, but it made my scalp itch like crazy so i stopped.

I have also tried Propecia, but was convinced it was scr#wing with my libido so I stopped
Rather be bald than never getting my rocks off again!!!!!

I also had the same reaction to Minoxidil, made my head scratch like a MOFO so stopped that.

I've had excellent results with Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner for at least 14yrs now. In the past I've stopped using it for a few months and received comments that my hair is thinning but as soon as I go back on the treatment for a few months my hair improves dramatically. I've also started taking folic acid supplements over the last 1.5 yrs. Can't really say how effective that's been but I guess every bit helps.

It hasn't launched yet but I'm keeping an eye on this:

Where do you buy said shampoo?

You'll find Nioxin at most hairdressing salons. If you're at a shopping center, price around as some guys bump their prices quite a bit. Expect +-R300 for the System 1 (normal hair) 300ml Shampoo and R350 for the 300ml Conditioner. I don't use the 'leave in' scalp treatment (which comes in a spray bottle) - it probably helps but it made my hair too oily.

I find I also don't use much more than a drop of shampoo and conditioner at a time, so it lasts around 6 months on average.

I think it's kinda sad how many men are on products for hair loss nowadays. Me and most of my friends in our early twenties are either already on it or looking at options.

It feels like men just go bald so early nowadays. Must be all these damn cellphones and other new-fangled devices. Everyone expects that they might go bald later in life, but when I look up my old classmates so many of them are either already bald or well on their way there in their early twenties.

Can't remember that you were losing your hair. Method otoh...

Haha, I caught it very early. My hair started thinning out aggressively early in 2014, so much so that people made comments about my hair looking different. I took it quite bad because at the time I had not even turned 23 yet, so I was pretty much constantly depressed about it. It probably contributed a lot to build-up to the Zewpening. :D

I'm probably going to go off the meds once my last two boxes run out. I wouldn't really suggest anyone go on it unless your hair is causing you excessive stress. It messes too much with your libido. I miss the morning wood. :(

So update. After a few weeks of using Minoxidil I developed an allergic reaction, so I stopped using it.

I then started using Finpecia, a Propecia equivalent, since November 2016. Now over 3 months later I can see a slight improvement in hair growth on my crown, but no improvement at all on my front.

Considering a strand-by-strand hair transplant procedure.

Just shave it dude. Doesn't have to be a clean shave initially, start with a number 2 or 3 and see how it goes. Eventually you stop giving a damn about it...

Shave it all off. There are many women (and men) that think a clean shaven head is tres sexy. Yummy. Nothing worse than visible implants or combovers. You will thank me.

lol there is a guy here with a massive combover...I don't know why someone would think a combover is an option at all...

You look downright retarded.

Best thing that happened to me, was the day I bought my very own Whall. Cut number one. Just need to join the gym now, can't look like Statham without the muscles.....
In any case, I feel liberated. No more helmet hair after a ride, no more R100 for a cut at the men salon. No more effort in the mornings.

Unfortunately neither of these treatments are really for receding hairline. It mainly helps for the crown and the top of the head, although there are some reports that it has helped some people on the front. I've been taking Finpecia for about 6 weeks now, so still a while before I'll know whether there's any improvements. I also thought about Minoxidil, however, it seems like a real chore putting it on twice a day, and apparently it's very oily, which wouldn't work with my hair. And as you mentioned, a few people get allergic reactions to it.

Going to see how Finpecia works for the next few months. I'm not sure I'll go down the hair transplant route, although I have investigated it. Shaving my head is a real last option though. It's all well and good if you look alright with a shaved head, but that is definitely not the case for many, so I'm happy to explore the options available until I eventually give up. Let us know how the hair transplant investigations go.

Too many time we go for expensive options due to our inbred thinking that the higher the price, the better it will work. Whilst this may be true some of the time, I have found a very simple and cost effective way to manage my hair loss. Note that what works for some, may not work for others:

1. Simple "Hair and Nail" multivitamin (Vital, Revite or any other common brand)
2. Natural oil conditioner that you apply after using your normal shampoo and after drying your hair. Amla oil, olive oil or equivalent. Available at clicks, checkers etc.

That's a misconception that many tend to build up in their minds because they're not used to seeing themselves with little/no hair. Once you get used to it, it becomes the new normal both for you and everyone else.

Like you guys, I used to be terrified at the thought of losing my hair. And now I don't think I can go back even if I had the option to. The lack of maintenance alone makes it worthwhile...

I always said the day it shows a patch, I'm shaving it all off. But don't know anymore, I have a really big egg shaped head.
Meanwhile it's getting thinner and thinner on top.

Minoxidil (in products like Regaine) is the way forward. Applied twice daily that becomes part of your regular routine like brushing teeth or shaving, will stop any receeding and will actually help things thicken up on top as well as speed up growth.

The side effect is you become hairier overall, but this really isn't a problem if you're a guy.

Have seen it work first hand for men and women, and will take this route when I start balding (already got the grey).

Egg-shaped head crew checking in. It's not as bad as you think, have shaved my head a few times and the awkward "is that really what my head looks like" vibe disappears after a day or two.
