Halaal restaurants

If you say so..

The places I buy croissants from are all flaky layered and buttery as all hell...

Well done. You found the 1% . So have I. It was a long and bitter search That still doesn't account for the 99% rolled bread encountered along the way. They are called croissants everywhere you go here

Simply Asia in the new Mall of the South is pretty decent. Something different from the usual stuff out there. I know the CPT'ers have been enjoying halal Simply Asia for quite some time.

Another one is opening at The Zone, Rosebank soon too.

Did take me long, I went to the bakery at my local spar..

You are welcome to drive from Jhb to Dbn to fulfill your croissant cravings...

You are totally ignoring the bastardisation fact...but no matter.

Why is haddock mislabeled in SA? It's the name of a fish. Not smoked hake. Does your local spar stock haddock. Then will definitely make the trip

No I'm not, since I haven't struggled to find a decent croissant....

I am fully aware that "haddock" is complete bollocks in this country and I therefore don't eat it..... but would you pay the price required for real haddock out of interest since it would have to be completely imported?

Maybe your taste/texture standards are a bit low then. But don't worry, am not judging. You would probably survive the fake pepperoni unscathed.

The haddock thing was just an additional example. It's called haddock, people think that's what haddock is. If you give them real haddock they will tell you that it's not real haddock . But they don't know any better....good on them. To them, haddock is smoked hake. Kind of like......pepperoni

No, only if they're Halaal do they think that crap that gets put on the pizza is "pepperoni"...

Anywho, moving on since you seem hell bent on trying to justify why halaal places all seem to want to put things on the menu that simulate foods they aren't actually allowed to eat.

You mean like pizza, and croissants and haddock?

Ok, dude.. whatever.... you seem to be missing the point ever so slightly (and I'm assuming its being done on purpose)

No, am not missing the point. Your issue was the 'mislabelling' of food for halaal purposes. My point is it is done commonly for all sorts of purposes. Why is it a bigger issue when it is for halaal purposes?

Ok, lets take your haddock example.

Its a mislabeling of food, without a doubt, for a massively inferior product, BUT the original is not readily available in this country and if it is available its horrendously expensive, but there are no religious restrictions on eating the original if one can find it.

In terms of the Halaal thing, its taking a food that is haraam, modifying it into something massively inferior just so that it passes the Halaal test... why not just call it beef sausage pizza or something, what is the appeal of eating a pepperoni pizza when what you are eating is not pepperoni and you can't eat the real thing because it is haraam?

but as i pointed out Pepperoni by definition does not have to contain pork - you assume it must contain pork.
So what you believe to pepperoni is incorrect?

I notices that you added a big BUT for haddock because of blah blah blah. Why is there not a BUT for halaal? So mislabelling is allowed for any reason apart from halaal?

Pepperoni is an American variety of salami traditionally made with pork and beef... other varieties may exist, but as far as I'm concerned they are not traditional pepperoni.

It would be more accurate to call it a Salami pizza if you ask me, its a word that means more in this country than pepperoni

Is the real version of Pepperoni made with pork readily available in this country at a reasonable cost?

Ok, Maybe I am not coming across correctly..

Mislabeling is never right, regardless of the circumstances, but it is understandable in some at least (where the real product is either unavailable or just so damned expensive that nobody would buy it)...

What I am trying to fathom out is why some Halaal places go out of their way to make substitutes for food that is haraam in its original form, what is the appeal to a muslim person eating substitutes like that? and also it pisses off non-halaal customers who order the item that is mislabeled.

I think we need to start a Sausage thread for this discussion. from all sources i can see (and i'm looking at AMerican ones specifically) most don't differentiate between pork and non pork they call em all pepperoni. -any way don't they put the junk parts of the animal in their anyway, grint it up add a bit of spice and colorant to make it look and taste appealing?
Lets agree to disagree?

Does the non halal Pizza huts use Pork Pepperoni?

Toxicbunny is there some kind of patent/blueprint/original makers recipe on what can or can't be called pepperoni?

Please quote that for us because as far as has been shown to you by others there are various kinds in use in the world today and just because you "think" that one version that you haven't tasted doesn't taste like you version that you prefer or have tasted means absolutely nothing at all to most people anyway.
