Half Life 2 - AI disabled

Try type ai_disable "0" in the console.

I'm trying to play Half Life 2, but for some reason, as soon as I start playing, it says "AI Disabled" in the middle of the screen, and, as you'd expect, all AI people just stand there... There isn't any setting for this in the normal options menu. What's up here? Can someone help?
