Hands-on with Altech's Node

Also looking for a content list :/

One thing I love with Netflix is the documentaries - I wonder if Node is only movies/series - or movies/series/docs?

I went on a bit of a fact finding mission as I was initially interested in this, but not any more.

DionWired, Autopage and Makro said that whether or not you take an installation voucher with the decoder, the price is still R3500, A bit silly IMO as I already have the whole HD Dual View dish on the roof.
Autopage, both instore and via email could not tell me anything about the content they offer. The response I got was "Refer to our website" and of course there is nothing there. Autopage did say that content is updated every 24 hours, but still doesn't help me.
Makro said that the series will be a season or 2 behind what is shown on DSTV so they cannot compete on that front.

I agree that is a little silly :/

It won't really effect me as I'd be starting from scratch anyhow, so I need installation. By the way - if this box needs an uplink to unlock the movies purchased, how does DSTV do it with Boxoffice right now ?

Please hive full feedback on this. I'd really like to know what it's like.

You and your good ideas :/

I actually do want to see a few more reviews, but that isn't bad

You to can have a computer geek in Korea switching-on the lights and opening the garage door of your house.

I want to see a few reviews, and more complete list of content and pricing on the "accessories" for Home Automation.

The accessories you can find at any hobby shop. They use a couple of the open standards for home automation. Can't remember the names specifically now though, but they were mentioned in the articles.

Specifically the costs

There's a list which looks alright - indoor/outdoor camera, occupancy sensor, hot spot / range extender, smart plug, VoIP phone.

Also wondering how fast/slick the interface is? I love speed, response and the smoothness of an interface.

They use things like Zigbee... which is a mesh network.. but they don't mention how the things integrate into the Node..

Knowing Altech, I would ASSUME that they want you to use their toys, not anyone elses.

Just watched a demo of one at Makro. Video is not smooth, with a bump every 3-5 seconds - nothing firmware/player tweaking can't fix. It seems to run Broadcom SOC and 4.2.2 Android. I'm not sure how locked-down the Android O/S is on this to allow for some customising (different launchers, etc).

Game changer, this device, I think, especially for those who want a out-the-box setup. I am unfortunately too heavily committed already with other TV Boxes (Minix X8, X7 & Ugoos UT1) with Netflix and XBMC to fork out the R3500 for this.

The series list looks vaguely acceptable... but paying for 11+ yr old movies.. nope no thanks.

Definitely a step in the right direction especially in SA but for me to buy this product I need to know I can install XBMC and play my HD content without a lag.
That the processor is Quad Core at least and can compete with latest Android players.
Most of the series I enjoy are not on the list.

+ for the home automation items you can purchase.
