Hey Gents,

I am a newly converted Linux user & I am enjoying Mint so far. I thought it would be a good idea to post a thread like this for me & other future noobs.

Either you can post the Linux app name & then post what it does:

Planet PDF: PDF Reader

or you could post the Linux app name & the Windows app that has similar functionality:

Openoffice: MS Office

Looking forward to reading some of the responses.

Good idea D3x. I am also a newly converted Linux user... on SLES 11 to be exact. Impressed so far. There does not seem to be a lot of "idiot friendly" help available on the web though. I need all the help I can get.

programs I use all the time

Artha: thesaurus
Wine: windows emulator
font manager: name says it all
inkscape: vector graphics editor

for some reason those are the only ones I can think of right now. ill add as more come to mind.

Network Usage Monitors:
vnstat
iptraf
mtrg

Text editors:
vim
kate

VirtualBox, run XP in Seamless mode inside your Linux Machine :)

Evolution Mail, has added functions of Contacts and Calendar like MS Outlook.

Remmina Remote desktop, does RDP and VNC, can save profiles for quick connect.

Google Chrome is blazing fast inside Linux.

Terminator - Replacement terminal, allows horizontal and vertical splitting of terminal windows.

Compiz Fusion with CCSM - makes your desktop do cool things :)

This page might be helpful: http://www.linuxalt.com/. Googling for "linux <appname> alternative" also usually gives a good result or two, if you're looking for a Linux replacement/equivalent of a particular Windows app.

My most frequently used apps:

Chrome
Pidgin
Skype
Banshee
VLC
VirtualBox and,
VMware player (better USB support)
Ubuntu Tweak
Eclipse
Docky!
Wine
Handbrake
Gimp
and soon Xbmc (97% complete)

For now, Easystroke, mouse gestures (key bindings), very cool.

I think I must be the only person who doesn't like Amarok.

for personal finance there can't be anything that beats kmymoney

Nope, I don't like it either, at least not for Gnome.

amarok suffers from the general kde problems. you need to have the resources. other than that it is a fine piece of software. i find myself switching between rhythmbox and aamarok as i try to remember why i stopped using the other one.

New one that I'm playing with:

Talika panel applet, windows 7 style taskbar applet for running applications. Very useful.
