Hangouts: Unified Messaging from Google

Tried this on iOS because of the promise of finally getting Gtalk on my iPad/iTouch. Off the bat it didn't seem to get the idea that I'd really rather not be sharing my conversations with groups of people at one time. The concept of having a single 'Hangout' with my wife was apparently abhorrent - are you SURE I can't link you with one of your Plus contacts (which is basically your entire Gmail mailing history)???? How about a 'Circle'? What's the difference between a Circle and a Hangout?

Not liking this one bit. More social desperation from Google.

Has anybody managed to verify their phone number using the Android app? It sends me a verification sms but I don't know what to do with it??

Yeah you press next and enter the verification number in the SMS to the field. Not sure what it does with that though.

Oh I see now it's been populating my normal Gtalks in real-time. And it's smooth. Not bad actually, my opinion has shifted.

Okay, figured out what I did wrong. You must omit the preceding zero on your number. I thought it would do this automatically but it doesn't work if you leave the zero there.

Finally!

Been waiting for a truly multi-platform Skype replacement forever and a day. Never understood why Google split this into so many different applications and with the announcement of BBM for other devices yesterday I actually commented that Google could rule them all if they just mashed it all together.

And there you have it.

Still missing Google Voice + SMS :(

If you've been using Google+ all of the above would make more sense to you.

I think it's awesome.

By the way before this why didn't you just use IMO or another App for GTalk?

Nobody uses Google+. I don't even use Facebook but my wife does. I resist social networking vigorously.

I did but it wasn't native and it always kind of sucked. IM+ pushes chats to me way later than they happen in real time.

my biggest problem none of my friends use google+ and I can't see them changing from whats app in a hurry

Doesn't work on my phone, play store says it's installed, but no icon for hangouts in app drawer, gtalk is still there but when I open it everything is just greyed out

I WANT IT NOW!!!!!!! I DON'T WANT MY OLD TALK I WANT NEW PLAYTHINGS!

Ok thanks, dunno why they had to disable gtalk in the meantime though
It's not disabled. It works fine on all my devices and everyone else's here in the office.
You're disabled

Did the Verge lie? Where is the iOS version? I need linky to all the things.

EDIT: This is a stand alone app right? Or do I get it though G+?
EDIT2: ^ Stand alone app. Search 'Hangouts' in iOS store. Win.

Working fine here. Haven't tested it yet but the app opens up as it should.
