Hangouts: Unified Messaging from Google

For those who do need presence indicators, someone posted a review that says if you uninstall the updates (on the Play store) (you also need to disable auto updates via settings on the app page) then it goes back to Google Talk. Worked for me and now I know if people are online when I message them.

Finally did some app updates after about a year.

How the fekking hell do you see your online contacts list? Seriously Googe .... WTF!@!!!!!!

I get that it feels like a drop in functionality, but how mich is it really? Whatsapp also doesn't show you who's online in list view? (both do show in individual view, so if you were checking to message specifically you can always do that)

Maybe Google thought it a moot functionality, since most IM'ing happens on phone and people go out of the app when they're done - but they still receive the messages anyway?

Whatsapp is basically always online so online functionality there would be a bit silly. Unless the phone is turned off or no data connectivity is available on the handset for whatever reason.

I just in general dont like this hangouts app. I cant see now who I can actually contact via gtalk ... or hangouts or whatever it is called now. I can just see "frequently contacted" and then there is a search box. I think this app is really k@k. I understand others might like it. I dont. It is k@k k@k k@k.

Cant wait for my friend that I contact the most on gtalk to get his frekking Samsung so he can get WhatsApp ... then I wont have a need for this stupid app anyway.

Hangouts is ***.

The Chrome extension for Windows is super-slow: I can type a whole sentence before the letters start to show up.

Plus, I like setting my status and here/away/don't bother me.

On my SII, it is fine, if a little slow.

Thanx to hangous I no longer use Gtalk on any medium.

Sys app removed that sucker so fast, it did not even have a chance to prompt.

I really tried to use it... but the size and UI was just getting to me.

Well I am enjoying it alongside Whatsapp. It's a joy to be able to message someone straight from pc... But all opinions are respected

+1, and I think whatapp would be the first to go if I ever had to choose

I also like how each conversation thread has its own read receipt system, as opposed to whatsapp that just has a system wide 'last seen' function. This way you definitely know when someone saw YOUR message. Also, if you don't feel like replying to someone else's message that you know is there, at least they won't think that you saw their message but just decided not to reply - You can still message other people

Decided to disable the chrome plugin, and just use the gmail version. It is less in my way, I keep gmail open all the time anyway, and most importantly, the chat windows now lineup next to my other tabs, like the tasks tab and email composing windows...

I got the update and took the plunge, connected all my SMS's to Hangouts...

Played around with Hangouts and tried the video calling...I still use Whatsapp like crazy
