Hangouts: Unified Messaging from Google

Was there, before hangouts, also a gtalk plugin that was present no matter which programme you're using, or no matter which site you are surfing, just like the Hangout PC plugin?

...it's become a social kiddie toy instead of the "workhorse" im I used it for.

Installed Trillian. Gives me most of the above.

Will try hangouts again later this year maybe.

This is what I want to see. This is a chat application I can actually use the way I do.

User1: This is a message
User2: Epic lolz, this is a response


I can copy paste that^ ****. No speech bubbles to get in the way.

I just got rid of trillian, pidgin is way better. Like hangouts on my phone, too many networks needing to be connected to as work to use hangouts, not until hangouts includes MSN and facebook and all and all and all.

When at home happy with hangouts speech bubbles don't get in the way, contact list is easy enough, but maybe I'm just not as pedantic as you are.

When it is for normal use it is fine but Hangouts just doesn't work for me in the work environment. I had Pidgin installed but it's just too damn ugly :p
 
My Galaxy note updated talk to hangouts. And has given me yet another reason to keep my blackberry as long as possible. I do not like the new system at all and far prefer the old talk where I could see who was online and also see my conversations.
 
I've gradually come to hate and resent the new Hangouts experience. On iOS it's extraordinarily laggy which is unacceptable given that other chat protocols run smoothly. On PC it sits exactly where I don't want it to and I can't do anything about the layout. It keeps wanting to force me into using Plus. I'm totally frustrated and looking for an alternative. Skype?

Problem is an alternative does require you to migrate all your contacts to it, Personally I like hangouts and it does not bug me at all, and with the great android explosion of whenever, every single skype contact I had, does not use skype anymore. Made it even worse when MS took it over, made it shiite, less secure, less private and full of adverts. Did not hurt that GTalks VOIP was far far far superior to skypes, probably another side effect of the MS buyout.

Personally, if we were friends, I would simply not chat to you online if you moved over to skype, unless all or at least most of my contacts are on there, I could care less, and many people are going to have the same feeling, its simply more convenient to use one for all than all for ones. Unless of course everyone just really hates hangouts with you.
 
That's the problem yeah... everyone I chat to is on Gtalk not Skype. Mass migrations never quite happen. I'll probably just keep using it out of apathy. if they could just fix the iOS client so it didn't lag so badly then I'd quit griping. But having to wait 2-3 minutes for a single message to load is unacceptable.

My problem is I haven't found anyone else who uses Hangouts, at least they''re not admitting to it, so I'm not using it either. Skype/Facetime for video/voice and Whatsapp/iMessage for chat. It's really no schlep having to use multiple apps so I don't mind, I'll use whatever they want to.

Hangouts is former GTalk, anyone with an android or GMail account is using it, or at least has one.
Its basically like MSN, it was big clunky and full of adverts, then came out skype which provided the VOIP that MS so miserably failed at, the followed GTalk as everyone started buying Droids and using GMail as Hotmail was also a big ****ty. Think BBM got a short foothold somewhere in the middle.
SKype again lost out, probably not because GTalk was a so brilliant, not that it was, but it was convenient and simple, did text, did call, no adds or pretty graphics, and then MS bought skype and added a clause into the TnC saying they can record and listen in on all your calls, video calls and IM conversations. Now that was a mass exodus.

they might have it but they (my friends/associates) aren't using it, at least not yet.
 
My only complaint against hangouts is the fact that it now uses 23 meg of my base memory (Xperia play only has 100 MB on the phone for apps) and I can not move the dam app to SD card.

On the PC I am cool with the Chrome extension, esp seeing that I do not have to open chrome or a message to get incoming messages.

And I do not care if people are available or not, 9/10 they respond within seconds of me sending a message, and if they not online they do get it via Email so I am cool with that.
 
I've got my wife and other people I message regularly to use hangouts, and it has eased my life. It is so cool to be able to message with whichever device is most convenient at the time: be it PC, tablet or smartphone.

Fortunately iMessage ticked those boxes for me already.
