Hangouts: Unified Messaging from Google

Btw anyone who's used Google plus hangout (the old hangout) will understand the potential behind this. It has enterprise level features, like real-time desktop share, multiple synchronous editing on docs, video share and naturally silly screen and sound effects. And it's free!

900M Android users, 450M gmail users, 750M chrome users. I think they can get a hold on the market, will take time.

One downside is they've moved away from open-source standards...
 
Quite like this app, I too am having trouble verifying. gotten 2 messages of random characters so far.
 
Got it verified, had to use the local number after the auto prefix, silly but hey.
 
Can you add an image in the normal chat window? Or an audio message? Like with Whatsapp? That would be really cool

Alright the more I use it the more I like this Hangouts business. Well done Google fellas, finally a worthy unified chat client.
 
I still want a smaller contacts list :(

Has nobody figured it out yet? Is it even possible?

What's wrong with the current one, 6 medium sized faces then a normal single line list, what less do you want?

Already does work, however Vodacom and CellC are blocking them. Do you still seriously use them, I get 50 every month on my contract and I got 150 left. I send 1 single solitary sms each month and its a 50c premium rated one. The only reason I do that is because it's the simplest way to buy electricity.

I use gtalk at work quite a lot during the day. I want a single line with a name and an indicator to show whether or not he is online so I can click and just find the guy I want to speak too. Not click and then type his name even though I chatted to him 30 minutes ago.

I just want a minimalistic view option.

That won't work with hangout, it combines your phone contacts with email, Google plus and Google hangouts. I speak to like 4 people on gtalk, but have a hangouts list of over 400. People synced in from linked in, Facebook, Google.

Minimalistic single line list will be vastly inefficient for what google intends this to be.

What possible advantage does the more "bloated" contact list give you over the "minimalistic" contact list? It's just styling.
 
The app seems to lag a bit. I guess I need to get used to the UI

Its not just styling, its function, intuitive function if they did it properly. Those 6 icons take up like a quarter of the screen and on my screen they my most communicated with so they perfect.

Then if I wanna chat with someone else there is a nice search bar so I can quickly find them in the list of like 400 odd without having to scroll till my fingers so are, but hey if you prefer the vastly more manual, less intuitive interface that's your choice, start a petition maybe enough people will care and Google will put in the option to disable the improvements.

I want the same screen and functionality with smaller contacts - less white space. Styling/theme issue.
