use knoppix?

can you run chkdsk on the drive before copying off data? (probably will lose some data on bad sectors tho)

wait for other ideas before running off. Take it easy, don't rush things.

I don't know Linux at all, can you suggest someone in CPT who is willing to help me?

When you put it in the other pc, was it as a single drive or as a slave drive?

It's a SATA drive, no jumpers for that.
In the 1st PC it took the place of a DVD drive.
In the 2nd PC it took the empty place, SATA 5 spot.

If there is nothing "private" on the HD then take it to a data recovery place..... will cost a few Rands but hay next time dont load porn on the HD :D

These pros, search for data recovery in your area.... or take it to a large-ish pc shop and let their techies handle it :)

Stuff is not porn.
I don't mind having someone recover it, I just can't afford to spend money, I'm not loaded... I barely have R500 till the end of the month, but thats neither here nor there.
The stuff is things I've been collecting for ages, I lose it, I wont get it back (as per usual but still)

Really need help guys, please, anyone.

Put your old drive back in and boot it up and choose "Last known...". It's worth a try.

Final try : If you have a hard drive identical to the problematic one, swap out the PCB's and try... but you'll probably get only one chance to copy the data over...

Only do this if you're sure what you're doing ;)

I've only actually tried "Safe Mode"

I'll toss the other modes in little later on and let you know.
