Well, after doing about 130Gb on my TelkomISP account, it appears that I've been hardcapped (I think). My account fails to connct every time with a bad username/password error. Is this how hardcapping is enforced? Will edit this post if I find another explanation.

Frack.

As far as i understand it, that is how you are hardcapped, GG on the 130gb though, impressive...

I don't think they would stop your password from authenticating. Did you phone them?

Surely they should give you some sort of an official warning.

Re: the 130gb, was that local or international bandwidth?

on their site

"TelkomInternet`s new DSL capping policy

November 1 saw the introduction of a formal capping policy from our access provider SAIX (South Africa Internet eXchange). The new service allows for greater flexibility for the various ISP's (Internet Service Providers) and permits both hard capped or usage based options. TelkomInternet has elected the usage based option which is the most flexible model allowing TelkomInternet to provide an improved service to our subscribers.

So what does this mean to you, our valued subscriber? To the majority of our subscribers it will have very little impact. The introduction of an average usage based option means that a hard usage cap will not be enforced on the basic services until such time as the average usage per subscriber per product set reaches the 2, 3 or 4 GB allocated limits. At this point all services exceeding the product capping limits will be capped.

Regrettably, high end usage will no longer be possible in this new model and hard caps have been imposed to maintain a suitable service for all concerned. High-end users will be capped once this pre defined threshold is reached, irrespective of average usage. A hard cap will terminate the service until the beginning of the new month.

As one of our subscribers, you will find that the first improvement has been the removal of the soft cap. Access to our local gaming and entertainment servers has been upgraded as well.

Next year will see the introduction of a range of services for those subscribers that would prefer a stand alone usage based service. These services will start from as little as 1 GB for the entry level home user to unlimited pay-as-you-go options for the business market.

Any concerns or queries can be raised by replying to this mail or mail [email protected].

Regards
TelkomInternet ADSL team"

Does anyone else know how hardcapping on TelkomInternet accounts are enforced?

I bet you, you have not gone through half the stuff that you have downloaded, so WHY DOWNLOAD IT then. This is the reason why we are going to be stuck with 3 gig caps for a long long time, besuase of selfish people like yourself.

As soon as the right people get hold of these stats with in Telkom, the will pull the plug. Catch awake, can stop being a bandwidth pig.

So you're saying no one has a legitimate reason to download 130GB. Thats absolute rubbish. The more people downloading the better because that'll show Telkom their averages were way too low in the first place.

(I use the word 'downloading' but it could be streaming video, gaming, whatever)

well im going to use on of these accounts
to do as i please!
which is lots of battlefield, and surf as i please, which should get me to about 15gigs!

130 gig is **** load of data... please give me examples of what you have streamed or games that you have played that uses that much input of bandwidth. Amuse me.

its not that hard to reach 130 gigs if you are using torrents since you tend to upload as much as you download, if you did 65 gigs which is easily possible you would have most likely uploaded 65 gigs aswell. although i doubt i would ever manage 130 gigs haha

You obviously have a very limited grasp of what's cooking mate. And i use EVERYTHING in that 130Gb I pulled off the net.

Dammit, that's it, I'm getting a TelkomInternet account.
Don't make that mistake mate, the hardcapping is coming into effect slowly but surely. new accounts will certainly be hardcapped. Says so on their website. Check my previous post.

Here we go again... "How can you download that much" "I only download 10 gigs a month and its more than enough for me" "You are an abuser!"

If you use your DSL line mostly for downloads, 130 gig is not that bad. And yes some ppl actually use everything they download. Weekly TV Series, Game ISO's, Streaming Video/Music, MP3's, Appz, "Educational Movies", Linux Distro's..the list goes on and on.

DSL SHOULD allow for 24/7 downloads, that was its intended purpose. Dont fall on your back and shout "Abuser" every time someone downloads a larger chunk of data than you. And if its with Telkom as an ISP - its all good!
