Let's say I'm an idiot and I don't know how to rip the DVDs I own, but I want to have them on my PC (Let's say I have 4 monster hard drives).sorCrer1 said:I have been on the net since the early 90's. I spend at least 16 hours a day online sometime more. There is no-way you can download 130GB of 'legal' electronic information a month. Please explain to me how you managed this?

Bottom line: use it to the max - you are, after all, paying through your arse for it. If anyone has a problem with people downloading high volumes over DSL - don't do it. Me, well I'm hardcapped now. Thanks Telkom and all you w@nkers that preach against them and then turn around and take it up the tailpipe.
Why don't you give us a list of some of the stuff you downloaded. I am all for removing the 3GB cap which is crazy but 130GB is a lot stuff. I agree with sunsoffun. You are playing into Telkom's hands. They will use this against us. Remember, if they don't think they are making enough money, they have it in the power to raise the prices. They have already gotten away with this once. I would also be a little bit concerned that they may try and bill you for the amount you went over the limit. They have been known to do worse things.riggs_9mmp said:You obviously have a very limited grasp of what's cooking mate. And i use EVERYTHING in that 130Gb I pulled off the net.
Now you are giving RIAA amunition. I am a software developer and by downloading illegal content you are stealing from someone.riggs_9mmp said:Someone please give me a slap on the wrist for downloading/uploading 130Gb of illegal stuff. This thread has lost the plot, as have many of you blokes.
There are people that are using DSL for business and other legitimate means. You are effectively making it more expensive for them.Bottom line: use it to the max - you are, after all, paying through your arse for it. I never said I was happy with the cap. Actually, I said the opposite. Everyone at the moment is suffering because Telkom felt that we were "abusing" the old system. They have changed once and will do it again. 3GB is nowhere near enough and I can't wait for the day when we get our television through the internet. Watch, they are going to enforce a 1 hour disconnect for all users next or something crazy like that. Every time we push them, they slap us harder and laugh more.lord_spaceman said:If this guy can download 10 TB worth of data on a 1GB cap account (and Telkom isn't stopping him), good for him, burn those wires, baby, yeah ! You get what you paid for and if it was 10 TB, good bargain. Telkom has definetely brainwashed MANY people into believing 1 - 3 GB is enough and if you do find it enough and you are happy with these small restrictions - THEN YOU ARE THE ABUSER ! Please go back to 56K dialup and stop using ADSL. You can get 1 - 3 GB off a 56K dialup.
I think they already make more money every year from ADSL then the whole undersea cable cost the taxpayers. Nuff said.Trent242 said:I would love to see what their cost / income ratio is regarding ADSL.
Nice breakdownAbe said:I think they already make more money every year from ADSL then the whole undersea cable cost the taxpayers. Nuff said.
100000 users x R540 (384K line and 3GB) = R684 Million per year
Cable was R3.6 Billion but Telkom portion is only about R720 million
Cheers

I don't think the cable could handle that so some businesses may be a tad upset. I don't think that 300GB is abuse. My problem is that big brother percieves it as "abuse" and will shaft us all for it. They obviously work on the principal that they have lost that extra money although it's not something that they would have had anyway.lord_spaceman said:What if all that 10TB was totally and 100% legal (impossible in this day in age, I know), but just speaking. Does that still count as abuse ?
That is the whole cost of the cable. Not an annual cost. Annual maintenance is only about R10 million so I am told.Abe said:I think they already make more money every year from ADSL then the whole undersea cable cost the taxpayers. Nuff said.
