Hi all, it's been a while now that my external hdd have this problem. I get this problem each time I copied stuff from a friend. If I click on the hdd icon in my computer, it asks me what to do, and I must do it that way around each time. Explore also dont help, I also get the same message, asking me what to do. Antivirus doesn't get the virus, so what can I do?

If you can get on to the hdd, make sure you can see hidden files, search for a file called "autorun.inf" if you find one, open it in notepad, check if it opens a file on autorun, if it does, delete that file and delete the "autorun.inf"

hope this helps

its a virus on your friends pc (or a program) that creates the autorun.inf file.
you might not get the virus, but u have the affect. your friend needs to get an anti-virus program.

the autorun.inf delete will fix the problem.
or backup format.

Nifty trick I discovered:

Assuming the drive is NTFS formatted, create a blank autorun.inf. Then set the permissions to deny all for everyone on that file. Remove all the other users that have access from the permissions list. Should prevent problems next time round.;)

To set permissions, you might have to disable simple file sharing (XP) or File sharing wizard (Vista) under folder options.

I searched for the autorun.inf file, but isnt there. Is there any trick in finding it?
