I have a little 160GB drive that I use as Backup #1 - its started dying - I copied win7 RC1 on it - and when trying to write it to DVD, noticed the drive making the dying clicking sound - it eventually stopped - and the DVD crashed - now when I try access the ISO image on the drive, it says corrupt...

My main concern is my archive of MP3s, is it possible that they'll be corrupt if copied off? i.e. they copy successfully, but then one day when I try play them - it says 'broken' mp3? :(

If they copy there should be no reason for it to be corrupted unless the drive you copy to corrupts it AFAIK, you could use synctoy to do the backup and it will have a log of errors you encounter.

Thats my thinking - but I can copy the Win7 RC1 off the drive, and then try open it, and its corrupt.

Yeah, if you can read it off the disk without any errors then the mp3s should be OK. The problem only occurs when writing to a faulty disk....

Probably got corrupted while being copied to the faulty drive?

Anyway best to try and get all the data off the drive before it's too late.

Something that may be a little off the actual topic, but I remember when win7 was in beta still, there was a patch for mp3 corruption. I assume it has been fixed with later versions, but anyway...

The Mp3's should copy off fine, as Aqua said the Win7 may have been copied corrupt.

I would get whatever you need off ASAP.

Thanks. I'll do so... its over the majority of my legal mp3 collection, so all the album art is there, etc.

DISCLAIMER: Maybe not so legal anymore since the CDs were stolen...Thanks SA.

If you don't get any checksum errors, the data integrity is likely still sound. But just for kicks, back it up; you can never make too many backups.

Regarding the legality, I thought you were allowed to make backups of your music (one copy) for precisely this reason? If so, then that music is still legal. Right?

Problem is proving I used to own the CDs?

I do have two other backups, but this is my most up to date backup, I think I'll go buy a new drive tomorrow, and do a comparison with one of the other backups, only keeping the files on this drive that are newer.

Ah, good point :o

Or you can do checksums on the files
