Her current laptop is a Celeron and it just can't keep up - terribly slow even with an SSD.

Her work involves a few spreadsheets and mostly open tabs in chrome (booking system etc) so I'm hoping the 8gb ram and i3 will be able to get through her work alot quicker as current because now it is extremely slow.
 
So I ordered the dell i3 with 8gb ram and then also ordered a 256gb M.2 drive (was R100 cheaper than the sata version) WD Green which I will install alongside the 1tb HDD. Total came to R7100 which isn't too bad.

M2 drive cheaper than the Sata??
You sure that the cheaper M2 drive has the correct interface for the laptops drive bay?

Sorry was meant to say same price - R599 for WD Green 240GB M.2 Sata. Double checked on Dell website and it says can fit M.2 PCIe.

Just realised it is data and dell website says PCIe so does that mean it won't fit?

edit: ignore that, just watched a video on YouTUbe and the M.2 I ordered will work fine.

I'm sure you made the right choice with the i3 but did you ever attempt re-installing her old celeron pc and remove unnecessary software / startup items? It can make a BIG difference to the speed of the laptop. I tend to install win10 LTSC these days it is more responsive than normal win10 as it does not have all the tile rubbish, microsoft store, edge etc

Damn bit late to the party but was going to suggest also looking at an AMD Ryzen based laptop.

Anyway the i3 will be fine. I have a 5th gen i3 with SSD and 8GB RAM that I use for studies and some basic programming. Does the job.

Can't really vouch much for the brand / build quality / upgradeability but these seems a bargain, valid till 24 Sept at game for R3999:

I-LIFE - Zed Air Core i3 Silver

I'm sure these wont have dual storage though so would have to swap the hdd for a ssd

Full HD display and significantly better than a Celeron... Pretty decent for R4k

I bought (near as I can tell) the last two Seagate Xbox game drive 8TB external hdd's (or whatever you call them) from Makro for R2k each and I thought that was the bargain of the year- the 'normal' pc desktop variant of the same external drive was/is going for R3k. So I'm not sure R1.5k is realistic. Probably a pricing error as said above.

Correct. And as was mentioned before in this thread, raru is really bad with refunds. Even is it was 'in stock' and it emerged that it was a pricing error, you can wait weeks (months?) for your refund

exactly, they would have told you we made a mistake and refund you within 4-6 weeks.
