Think I have seen them for around 1k but no sim and I haven't looked at the forked Android it runs

You have a large community offering custom roms etc for the kindle tablets, not much else around the 1k mark.

Why spend time on custom roms when its just an e-reader

I would go with the kindle seeing it has superior IPS screen and newer android. Also If it was me I would use a R150 off voucher and then it is only R849


edit: posted specs for smart tab 1 by accident (not 2), above you can see comparison on gsmarena
I see gsmarena specify the vodacom tab only has 4 GB whereas game says 8GB, not sure who's wrong

edit 2: googled some more, seem vodacom tab has 8GB and also android 5.1. So only major difference is superior screen on Kindle
