Seems to be very common on the LG set-top dvd players/recorders - not sure about their PC DVD drives.

I repaalced my last one two weeks ago @ R500 for the optival drive unit, so I bought 2 as I know it will die in the next year... the first one I replaced (13 months from new) cost R800+ to replace, so at least the replacement cost is dropping year-by-year! Still cheaper than buying another top-end model :p
Agreed, every LG dvd recorder I've owned has had drive issues. When you say you've had them replaced have you bought optical drives and installed them yourself or have you taken the recorder into LG and had their repair center do the installation?

I've always bought the optical drive units from their Spares Division in Barbara Road (Elandsfontein, JHB) and installed myself - if you can install a PC optical drive, you can install the ones on the LG very easily... remove 7-9 external case scews, 4 internal screws for the optical unit, carefully remove faceplate clips, unclip optical drive data and power cables, remove unit - reverse for installing new drive... :)

Never take to the repair centre, unless it's still under warranty - a buddy of mine needed a new optical unit in his LG and it took them 7 weeks to fit as described in the method above - that's just ridiculous - he could have done it in 2 hours, including the 80km return-drive to LG to collect the new unit! Their service centre turnaround times leave a lot to be desired - the spares dept are very helpful though.

Excellent, that's exactly what I'll be doing, thanks for the heads up...

Yeah, you have to be quick. It was a Deal of the Day special, sometimes a day or two, or as they say in the classics - while stocks last.

Did you hear, there is opening a new Incredible Connection store in Akasia apparently.

Gonna see if I can get some info on some special opening prices

Anyone bought the Verbatim 1TB external from Makro? Bigicy (forumite) told me when his colleague went there, sale people told him not to get this as there were so many faulty returns. Just to let you guys know.

Verbatim 4GB SDHC Memory Card - R299

Not listed on online catalogs

I don't see that this qualifies as a bargain. My local PC shop (Rustenburg) recently sold me an 8GB Kingston SDHC for that price....

Dates matter.

I just got a 8GB microSDHC Class 6 with a USB reader for R250 at Sybaritic.
