I was gonna ask the same thing, but I think he's trying to illustrate that the Esquire deals aren't really that special

Yep, and Western Digital is one of the more reliable brands as shown in a study recently. Less failures then Seagate.

Perhaps I am unfortunate that I had massive amount of failures in SANs and NASs with WD server drives. Have not had any issue ever switching to Seagate. My home-NAS dropped 5 WD server drives within 2 months (only 18 months old) whereas the replaced Seagates have now been running for solid 3 years.

We have had the exact opposite issues on our DVR systems using NAS devices to store video footage, been replacing Seagate drives with WD, the failure rate on the Seagate drives has be very high.

Remember that there is a difference in reliability of "green" drives vs regular drives. If you read the report about BackBlaze you will find that they are quite happy with the Seagate ST#000DM001 drives. The desktop drives I used in NAS environments were Seagate ST2000DM001 (2TB) and ST3000DM001 (3TB) which are rock-solid. Also remember in a business model like BackBlaze (providing cloud storage) there will always be a trade-off between failure rate and price. I would think that they have opted to go with some Seagate models as those where cheaper and it was acceptable to have a higher error rate. Also remember those are desktop drives being exposed to usage patterns your regular PC or home-NAS would never experience.
