Esquire have the Samsung 1tb and Seagate 1tb for slightly cheaper does anyone know what hard drive is inside the Samsung external? Im assuming the Samsung 1tb 5400rpm drive?

Why? If it fails within 12 months they'll replace it. It's not as if their in-house techs can repair a failed drive

I have the same one, all the dial does is at the first click it turns on and has a dim white LED activity indicator under it. More you turn the dial the brighter it gets.
