Meh - suits me fine. Hoping it'll speed up boot time for a N54L micro-server - don't need bigger than 64GB. Also, the included internal enclosure should allow me to re-purpose a laptop's HD after replacing it with an SSD (which was not 64GB, or SATA II, or ancient).

I guess one might say we post specials for what they are priced at in comparison to their usual price range or competition and not why everyone would or would not need one - the demand might be niche.

Was also looking into this, but then came to the conclusion that the time has well and truly passed for watching media on physical discs with the associated headaches like region-blocking (which this player is).

Actually getting it just for the USB use.

Was looking for a cheap way for my dad to watch some media, his 75. First bought a Samsung F5100 last week and returned it yesterday because of a faulty USB input and decided to cash out. Now ordering the upgraded blu ray player, Samsung H5500 3d from Kalahari: Kalahari Link at R969.

Then used this promo code to get a further R75 off: kalaharicloudMar15

Total cost: R894

R50 more expensive than the 5100, but R200 less than it costs at Takealot.

I noticed the following in the description:

Dolby Decoding Channel: 2 ch
DTS Decoding Channel: 2 ch

I've seen this before on blu-ray players. Does this mean it can't output 5.1 or does it just have an internal amp to directly connect 2.0 speakers to the player?

It also has this which means it should output to 5 channel:

•Dolby Digital: Yes
•Dolby Digital Plus / TrueHD: Yes
•DTS Surround: Yes

We needed something that could play MKV and divX HD off USB and I can't find anything cheaper.

Will you please let me know if it can handle NTFS drives? My dad has an old blu-ray player that can't handle NTFS...so quite useless to me :p

I hope you don't run into any Cinavia issues since all Blu-Ray players are required to have it.

On the Carbonite forum, the reason it's so cheap is it being a OEM drive, it doesn't come in a fancy box etc but it's still brand new.

along with a 6 month warranty. SSDs rarely die though, I also bought an OEM drive last year, used it for just over a year before upgrading and had no issues.

Also the endurance test done by The Tech Report:

The fact that the 840 Pro exceeded 2.4PB is nothing short of amazing

That means if the drive doesn't die for another reason you can theoretically write 100GB every single day for the next 65 years before the drive wears out.

Yes it can. On my 3rd Samsung Smart Tv and all of them handled my 2TB external. And yes it outputs 5.1
Hooked up to my 1000RMS samsung surround system and works like charm. Just remember some rips are 2.0 but then your sound system will kick in and convert it.

Had old 5500RR and supported 5.1 but not DTS. My HU7000 works like charm.

Last night I paid R1500 for a brand new 256GB Samsung 840 Pro.

OEM drive...doesn't it also have a different model number than the retail drive (SM841)? So you didn't buy a 840 Pro but a SM841.

OEM drives don't support firmware updates. The OEM manufacturer has to provide it, which almost never happens. Also you cannot use the Samsung Magician software which includes the amazing rapid caching mode.

Well not really, they are OEM drives, and my take is that they are cheaper and have a shorter warranty for a reason. I think their flash could be cheaper (sych instead of toggle flash) flash or binned lower than the retail drives. I can't prove this but you have to ask yourself why they are sold on the grey market with a 20th of the warranty (.5 of a year instead of 10 years).

256GB DELL SM841:

READ MB/s Write MB/s
SEQ ........... 524.2 504.0
512K .......... 484.5 490.6
4K .............. 37.57 70.14

QD32 ......... 252.4 234.7

256GB RETAIL BOX 840 PRO

SEQ ........... 499.1 506.6
512K .......... 465.1 492.1
4K .............. 30.47 66.41

QD32 ......... 226.0 202.6

They are 100% identical except for the firmware, it's just the OEM version they sell to Dell, which is why it only has a 6 month warranty, because if the drive is inside a Dell laptop you have the Dell warranty of how many ever years.

When the software SAMSUNG MAGICIAN is used to tweak the OS, YES IT DOES inflate performance a LOT, but that’s cheating, especially with Rapid Mode it’s not really bench testing the SSD, it’s cashing system RAM. IF Samsung Magician worked with OEM firmware, the scores would be the same for either drive.

Don't worry I didn't just buy it on a whim, I did my research.
