Argh! Thanks for this. Now my head aches. Do I go for this or the Galax GTX 970 for R1k more? The performance seems only slightly better on the 970, but from what I've gathered, drivers on Nvidia are better and you get some extra options in some games?

If you not in a rush I would suggest wait a month or two. computex is in a months time and according to AMD they should reveal their next series. Otherwise it's really up to you if you want to spend the extra 1k. The performance for both are nearly the same. Power consumption wise 290 will eat a bit more but for 1k saving it's worth it.

You also get 500mb less vram for a R1000 more :)

+1, I already ordered my R9 290 from Wootware. Good price for solid performance

At 1080p the R9 290 is just fine. I doubt anything will max it out at that res for a few years.

I ended up getting the 970 as its quieter (machine also used for work) and was worried my power supply can't handle the 290. Don't think I would have noticed the difference in-game had I made the other choice.

If you're at 1080p, your power supply can handle it and you don't mind the extra noise the 290 is the better buy.

Also keep in mind your power bill. ;) I love my 970

The gtx 900 series has full dx12 support something the R9 200 series does not not have, some support not full. I dunno how this will affect future games/performance. the 900 series runs cooler & quieter, power consumption does not make that big difference, the cost over a year or two will probably be equal to a burger. If you cand spend R5k get the 970, if not the 290 will be fine or wait a bit & see what the Rx 300 series is gonna cost.
