I would like to know if anyone can tell me what sort of customs duties you would pay to bring in a desktop pc as a gift?

I had mine brought in by a friend as hand luggage. Converted price was approximately R8000,-. Customs deducted the amount allowed tax free, and charged me R1500,- extra as import duties. Wasn't too bad, since to assemble the same spec PC here would have cost me R20k to R25k! Have a look here for the specs... ;)

Dutys'is not your problem the cost of shipping is and the added VAT on the total value.

where did you get it from, if you don't mind my asking? and how did your friend manage to bring all that in as hand luggage???

Had my sister buy it at the Aldi in the Netherlands, and my friend bring it to me when he came here for a project. ;)

Very nice of your friend to do that for you, it's quite a shlep carrying a whole damn PC while travelling internationally.

Agree! Especially since the PC weighed almost 19 kg! And that as hand luggage, with a carrying strap over his shoulder... and his notebook on the other shoulder! But he flew business class, so storage on the plane was no problem. ;)

You can therefore elect to pay either a flat 20% of the value, or you can elect to pay the full duty.

I think that custom duties on computers were abolished a year or two ago (cannot find the rate table anywhere?), so technically one should only be charged a handling fee + VAT.

Just brought a box from USA. No duties only vat and customs fee.

I have recently bought: 2 x cpu's, 2 x gfx card, MB. Different shipments. No duties, no VAT. R25 clearance fee per shipment. Express shipping from USA is +- $70 (+-7 working days) This all through the legal channels etc. If they don't want me to pay, should i offer to pay?

What you think the VAT and customs fees are ? those are the duties :D

Nope Customs Duties are totally different and seperate to VAT and Customs Fees. But then who cares...

Currently there should be no Customs Duties on PC equipment, as I recall our dear Gov scrapped these a good couple of years ago, but then why did the prices not drop? Oh well...
