Has anyone actually used Wireless N?

I've got a wireless between 2 of my PC's (I connected occasionally with my laptop or smartphone).

These PCs are in the lounge and the study - directly above each other - I'd guess 3m with the floor inbetween.

4 years back, I bought myself a Draft N Linksys router/wireless and a PCI Linksys for the other PC. Signal was 80+% and all was great.

About a month back I bought a Netgear Wireless N USB stick and assumed now I'd get at least double the speed I used to. WRONG! No matter what I did, I could only get them to pick up Wireless G ... which gave me identical signal speeds to the Linksys combo.

Today I decide to buy a new Netgear Wireless N router - thinking perhaps there was a compatibilty issue with the Netgear/Linksys. The result? 60% signal and slightly slower than what I got on my Wireless G.

Has anyone actually used it successfully? Is it all marketing talk? I didn't expect 270mbps - but even 70mbps would be great!

Could there be something I'm missing?

Isnt 802.11n still in draft? I get pretty decent speeds off mine but the hardware is all the same brand which probably helps.

I have used USB draft-n with draft-n router and got pretty good speeds. Nowhere near 270Mbps; closer to 100Mbps but with quite a bit of latency.

Are you sure that all your hardware is correctly configured?

Are you looking to sell either of your draft-n routers? :D :D

a few years ago the Draft N stuff you'd have gotten would have been Revision 1... now they're onto Revision 2 or 3.. and I don't think the specs are compatible...

It is in draft, and has been for several years. The most recent is draft 2.0, which fixes some issues in the first. Hardware should only make a difference if they're using some extra tricks to improve range or quality. With G, this was common, but there shouldn't be much variation with 'N'.

Which models did you buy
?. Is it only working on G?

As a rule thumb, wireless devices on different levels should be connected with a cable. Perhaps the concrete roof is interfering with the signal??

The wireless equipment now I have is the same make : Netgear WNR 2000 http://www.netgear.com/Products/Rou...ateways/WNR2000.aspx?detail=Specificationsand Netgear WN111v2. (http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adapters/RangeMaxWirelessNAdapters/WN111.aspx?detail=Specifications) Both are brand new units and Draft N - and both have the latest firmware. However, signal is only 60% and speed is just about the same as my G used to be. It is different levels, but my 4 year old Linksys WAG 300N did a far better job!

In the past when I used Linksys/Linksys G I got 85% on different levels. Even when I used Netgear/Linksys the signal was the same - but it seems this new Netgear WNR 2000 is pretty shyte.

Reviews say it's alright - but in reality it's got a pretty weak signal from this WNR 2000

Bleh. Next time I'll stay away from Netgear ...

PS If I sell, it'd be close to what I paid (since I bought it yesterday) from Incredible Connection ... so I was probably ripped too :P

Yeah, I've seen that a lot - especially trying to sell HP procurve APs. All wireless devices are not the same, regardless of the Draft.

Mostly the customer looks at the spec of the device, and then queries why the HP/Cisco/Linksys is 4 times the price of the cheapest model he could find....

To make matters worse, I see I paid too much Incredible :/

I know they used to rip people, but recently the pricing has seemed alright. Online the same router is around R1100.00

That's why I reakon it's to early to go with N. The whole purpose of a standard it to ensure all devices from different manufacturers work seamlessly. Until then, I am quite happy with G. Now it's just paying premiums for stuff that is not up to it.

I moved over to N a few weeks ago, and PC's through about 5 brick walls can connect to it, albeit slow speeds. 802.11g wasn't even able get a signal.

By any chance did you change the settings in the router to the fast speed. It think on the netgears the setting is up to 270mb.

I use Wireless n at work, I'm 3 metres from the main server and router and I still get fluctuations between 54mbps and 24mbps

Though it says max speed supported is 270mbps, think I'll have to sit directly next to the router for that...disabling N makes it more stable and faster so will stay away from N for a while

I took the Netgear back and got a Linksys WRT160N. Apart from having a much higher build quality and looking good, I get 80 percent signal from switch on - no tweaking.

As mentioned it does say 'connected at 145mbps' or something - but my real throughput is about 30mbps.

What do you guys get realistically on N? How long does it take you to send a 1GB file?

Even at a measly 30mbps, I think I'll keep the linksys purely because of looks and build quality, assuming its stable

Then obviously you're too close. Move away and the signal will improve.:p
