A friend has been having problems with a hauwei e220 modem she has been using.
It suddenly started playing up on her laptop.

It kept being found as a new device, the thing would install the software, then minutes later windows recognizes a new device & the loop starts.

I have connected it to my laptop (mac) new device (new hardware interface found) found, installs the device & all seems fine.
I would run the vodafone mobile broadband (mac).
With the sim card inserted, the vodafone software would keep changing notification between "no device" & "device detected".

Without the sim card vodafone would always display "device detected"
If I insert the sim card at this point (device detected), a sim error is reported:

The various sim cards are all unlocked (pin) & function properly in other devices.

The modem itself is not network locked (friend was using it on cell c).
I managed to get it connected the other day with a vodacom card inserted.

It ran perfectly for hours, browsing, mail, uploads & downloads.

Now it is back to changing between "no device" & "device detected".
The firmware has also been upgraded to the latest available.

If using mAcme to connect usually an error is returned +cme error 13.

****
note while running mAcme at this moment everything suddenly came to life:

and here it is currently connected at the time of this post:

it would seem the modem is powering itself on and off internally (all usb ports are good & not connecting thru a hub)

any ideas ?

I've had the exact same problem with my MTN dongle as well. Don't have any advice unfortunately.

Change the USB cable

tried 3 different cables - all know to be working (constantly used cables) makes no difference.
also cleaned the usb connector on the modem & cables - no change.

it's odd that it suddenly "fixed itself" while I was typing the op & connected perfectly.

looking at it now (i am currently connected to internet via wifi) it's blue led is flashing correctly, during the times it is giving problems the green led flashes twice rapidly & never changes to blue - as if it is not seeing any mobile network.

If I insert the sim card at this point (device detected), a sim error is reported:
Never do that. Unplug, change SIM and replug.
What cable is attached to the modem? It was sold with short Y-cable. Always connect both plugs. Replace cable as already suggested. I must be a short one 15cm max, with double plugs little bit longer.

i have tried a short Y cable - made no difference
it is currently on a single short cable - about 15cm (found 3G network & connected)

change of cables made no difference.

never knew about / or followed the correct sim change procedure, but your comment regards removing & inserting sim while connected may well be a factor in causing the problem from the outset (i am clutching at straws here).

I am sure It was. I own E272 which has similiar SIM pocket. :)
