We have a biter, male boerboel who has always displayed very aggressive tendancies towards young boys (preteen). Its been such a mission at times but putting him down has never been an option so we have gone to great lengths to secure him when we have people with kids over. My sons friends are all older now and we have no problems with him but we still remain on high alert when my girl, who is preteen, has her little friends over. Prevention is better than cure. We have a field at the end of our road, he gets walked there at midnight so he can run around and getting out accidently is also not an option, we have a lot of school kiddies walk past my house to the local schools near to us. The rewards we have gained from having him far surpass this personality trait of his and although its been an inconvenience, we wouldn't change him for anything. He is 10 now, not much time left for him and the thought terrifies my family.

I fully agree.
In this situation however she changed very fast and had never responded to kids in this way before.
She literally was cool one day and snapped the next.
It's not an easy decision and I fully regret it every day.
I do however know that it was the right choice.

I nearly lost a brother due to infections from a dog bite.
He ended up in hospital for 2 weeks. During which he had an open wound on his arm. Drs and nurses cut and cleaned it daily.
It was not even fully stiched when he went home.

He was about 12 at the time.

I would have and will likely do the same thing you did under those instances.

I have been nipped at at worste, both instances because I was giving 1 pet a scratch and not the other (different people/dogs). And that really only happened coz I was between the 2 dogs and 1 got jealous.

As much as I love my pets (dogs, cats, birds, bunnies etc...) I play judge and jury when it comes to the choice of human vs animal. Humans wins, unless they practiced animal abuse, causing said animal to retaliate.

Damn that's bad! Hope you heal quickly. +10 on the tetanus shot.

I have a big breed (weighs 87kgs) and he is not friendly. The only time he will even get close to the front yard, let alone outside, is on a leash, supervised. He is extremely obedient and I have no problems controlling him, but nonetheless, he never goes out without a leash.

The problem lies with the owners who don't socialize, train, exercise and control their large breeds. Now unfortunately, the dogs will suffer due to the owners negligence...

But you are doing exactly that. These dogs are obviously vicious and need to be put down. This whole "but think of the doggies!" mentality when it come to these situations is wrong. They have proven that they pose a risk to human lives so you make a decision - poor doggies or poor human victims.

Sorry that does not compute. I am not doing that, for that would be idiotic. The two are not mutually exclusive. See Carol35's post above. Either you understand this point or you don't.

Pffft - those tetanus (and especially) rabies shots will cost you an arm and a leg (lol) - had the same and had to pay cash for rabies shots from the dispensary as the ER (despite being a Discovery comprehensive member) did not want to cover it. I would claim at least for all medical expenses.

A properly trained dog would have not shown that level of aggression, even if surprised or frightened.

That's very strange behavior indeed...do you think a kiddy did something to her? We think maybe one of my boys' friends may have hurt our dog when he was a pup because he has been very specific in his dislike for boy children within a certain age. Its a very hard situation to be in and I agree you prolly did the right thing, we did also contemplate it a few years ago but it was fleeting and we just made changes about the home to accommodate him and it worked out ok.

I just want to point out my dog has never so much as lifted his lip towards my children (or any family members)and he loves them dearly..my son and this particular dog are bonded brothers.

Good choice, you're preventing someone else from being harmed.

Narrowly escaped the same fate as OP. Also jogging. Some peasant didn't keep their dogs in line whilst pulling into the driveway. 2 big German shepherds charge me...2 meters before they hit me they hear the sound of the gate closing and sprint back inside.

Another friend got cornered by 4 flippin huge dogs (as in back against the wall)...owner shows up and asks whether the dogs are bothering him. o_O

Was bitten once...was just a scratch though (small dog & through jeans).

Hope you will be 100% fine :D (hugs) I'm glad that you have decided to ask for the dogs to be put down :) (brofists)

Housemate was bitten last year. Took a long time to heal. Take a photo of the bite every week and compare. If the red ring increases then go to the doc again!

I don't get the whole, "Now the dogs must suffer" bit. Dogs being put down do not suffer, they merely go to sleep and never wake up. It is the exact opposite of suffering.
People need to stop blurring their own personal lines here. If you have had a family pet put down (As I have many times), then you know that the family suffers afterwards, but the animal does not suffer.

Confusing the two, causes people to say silly stuff like, poor animals. For all we know, these dogs are not well cared for as it is. So putting them out of their misery is the most humane thing we can do.

And if you think they can be retrained, then sure, take them into your home and retrain them yourself at your own expense. Don't cry about the other options for the poor animals, but then expect other people/organisations to bear the brunt of the effort in executing those alternatives.

Agree with you, but the point is not 'suffering' but denying the dog life.

I got charged and bitten by a boerboel a few weeks ago. Went for a walk around the block in the small town and all of the sudden I hear a panic filled "stop" from the across the street.

When I looked over I saw an open gate and a big dog heading towards me, luckily I had a second or two to make a choice and I chose to stand still and upright and keep my cool so that I wasn't seen as a threat.

Got two nice big holes in my leg, but the dog lost interest right after I was bitten.
9 Stitches later, 4 on one hole, 5 on the other and a bill of R1700.

The owner's mother opened the gate waiting for the owner's car to arrive.
With kids taunting these dogs over time, any stranger that passes by is immediately seen as a threat.
They might of also sensed the panic in the lady's tone, and reacted based on that.

Anyways after the bandage goes off, English salt and a bit of mildly hot water works well to kill the germs. Must treat it every day in order not to get infection.

Could of been worse, luckily the second one stayed in the yard, two over excited dogs, I doubt standing still and remaining silent would help.

The owner in this case needs to be put down. Poor dogs having such a bad owner. Nail him for all his got.
It's unfortunate though but the dogs are going to get the rawest end.
It's also unfortunate that in this country we tend to have dogs more for protection than for pets.
Hope you recover 100%.
