Surviving the lunatics driving on the roads in SA automatically grants one a super super advanced driving course for just staying alive.

With access to that kind of power, what are you then - how fast have you gone?

I did 210 once, now think I must have been raving mad....... but do remember it seemed great back then.

Not worth it. Really
Not sure if you are referring to speed on track? I think we did about 180 down the back straight at Zwartkops. And 170something coming up the hill after the back straight.

No need to speed on the road though that's just silly. The AMG driving experience is interesting though, the skid pan is probably the most eye opening in terms of everyday driving. And the track was more an example of what the car could do even with a normal person driving it

Does self-taught count for anything?

I do, always have, and always plan to drive older cars (pre-electronic safety features), and I will 100% say that my practice has turned a certain collision into an easy, uneventful miss on at least one occasion.

I use abandoned parking lots/gravel roads, and practice either keeping the car as close to the limit as possible, or purposefully losing and regaining control. Abandoned parking lots are great after it rains and the entire thing becomes one big skid pan.

I try to do that at least monthly. I did it once with my wife in the car which resulted in much screaming and her saying "I married a fking child"

Does a rally stint count?
Funny enough my step-father was a ranked rally driver in the UK. He taught me to drive, the driving school then made me unlearn most of what he had taught me, then finally he really put me through my paces after I passed my test.

Calling all:
Marauder owners
Red Ford Escape owners
SUV drivers owners

For a one time destruction derby at Tygerberg raceway.
One of 56 land invasions in that year.

I reckon that trumps anything offered on closed courses. I had a ride-along in a rally car years ago during a national rally in KZN and it was God-damn terrifying.

The best takeaway, getting the experience, was seeing how the blind was trained to navigate. I would have never known that something like that was possible.

I cannot imagine how it is done. I've seen some videos. Incredible!

Odd - so far 35.7% people claim they're advanced drivers and yet every single traffic circle in SA indicates otherwise...
What does a traffic circle have to do with advanced driving courses? I mean maybe when it's wet and turned into a skidpan.
Also you know that MyBB does not in anyway reflect the general SA population right?

Completed the AMG full day course at Zwartkops about 10 years ago. Should be made mandatory for new learners/drivers.

Do I need one after 15 years of driving a Yellow Toyota bakkie, and scarying the daylights out of the Voklswagen GTI, and Opel Super Boss drivers, trying to keep up.

K53 is actually a really great system. The thoroughness of it is definitely a reason why corruption within it is so rife. And why so many elect to learn how to drive a truck.

Advanced Driving is a really great thing to do. But mostly because it reinforces your experiences on the road rather than try teaching you this when you don't have the experience.

I feel I did not really learn a huge amount more than what my driving school teacher taught me. But the fact that you generally will go for AD when you are 25+ years old compared to 17/18 when you learn to drive, a lot of the information sticks better.

Did a defensive 4x4 anti-terrorist thingamajig. Does it help? Not really. My nerves are still shot every time the girlfriend drives.

Edit: spelling

Twice. During the course of my old job in SA. First time 7 day course, second time around 5 day course. Fun at first, but then becomes boring.

Me mum's nerves is shot everytime I drive, even with dad present.
Dad with me? Not a care in the world. Brother? He hates it. Me when I ride shotgun with mom? OKish.

With Dad? Ehh, I have to warn him constantly when something ahead changes, and he does not react fast enough. (like someone brakes abruptly like 3 cars ahead), so my attention is full on the road, and very attentive on what everyone else is doing on the road.

I really would like to do a advanced driving course, to drive more safely and handling the car properly when certain conditions is present (what to do when the vehicle is slipping in rain, etc).

Long story short, no, but is on my wishlist.
