Have you noticed that Linux is everywhere?

Linux free since twenty-ten. I tried but it just wasn't for me.

Hey Alister,

Just thought I would point out something:

As far as media coverage goes, 2010 doesn't appear to have been the best year for Linux. In years gone by it was common to see headlines proclaiming this or that government to be moving to Linux, or this or that company switching to free software. Not so in 2010, where tech media was dominated by tablet PCs, web applications and mobile phones.
"Russia to adopt Linux as national operating system by 2015"

The tech news dominated by tablets PCs you mention have a lot running on android linux.

Dont you have an adsl router? Its running Linux. Do you not host a website on a Linux server? Got no NAS devices?

It's possible, since I eased back on design work we've started migrating over to Squarespace and I don't know what they use.

Definitely became more mainstream, I have been Windows free since the beginning of 2010 and even have my dad using Ubuntu, virus free!

I've tried various flavours of Linux and can't seem to get into it. I suppose I'm just too used to using Windows and couldn't be arsed to use something else unless I was forced to do so. I'm thinking that unless one has choices, the only realistic option is Linux and therefore they're kinda forced into it.

I'm a Linux geek to the core and glad about the increased penetration of the OS in the market, but we still need Windows as it allows us to appreciate Linux even more.

we still need windows to play games on the pc, the only way it will get any adoption is when business and entertainment apps start maturing.

Linux is big everywhere except the desktop.

Phones, embedded devices, entertainment systems, servers, super computers, network appliances etc etc etc. If it's got a cpu it's probably running linux, you just don't know about it...

No its more likely that increased mobile gaming will drive increased gaming on Linux, since developers will have to use OpenGL and *nix to make games for mobile, and are already using OpenGL to make console games for non MS hardware. If anything, this will make the PC port of a game more effort if they are already using open standards on every other platform and want to use DirectX just for the MS version.

It may even be considered not worth the effort, resulting in fewer games for PC. We've already seen this happening with PC vs console, now its going to be PC vs console/mobile/tablet

This is true, when I get home from work (Win7) or shutdown my VM at home (XP), I feel much better once I am back using a decent OS.

But yeah, maybe it's just me! :D

Still an avid Windows 7 user, but Ubuntu is my rock when M$ crumbles. It just works. Pity about games, but no WINEing from my side. I just use Windows mainly, but at this stage in the game I am way more likely to consider a switch. And I am Android 110% of the way:-)
