Hay Fever Advice Pls!

I'm sure I don't have to tell many of you about the swollen eyes, burning throat, constant running nose etc.

Thing is, I've been through the Allerjax, Illiadin tabs and salt solutions - does not work anymore. Last three yrs I go for injection, but this only last for a month now @ R700 a shot and only allowed two shots in 12 month cycle. In between I use Texa tabs. This year it seems worse.

Was wondering what works for those of you with extreme hay fever? Mine normally starts from middle Sept.

I wish they could cut out the thing that makes the Histamines.

This year is bad. I hope the rain will make it a bit better.
 
Go to an ENT specialist, he will probably send you for a blood test, then find the best medication for you.
 
I had blood tests about 12years ago now, basically if it moves or grows I am allergic to it. Been taking Telfast 180 everyday since, they work but you will never feel 100% all the time, but you are a 1000 times better than without it.

PS Telfast is about R250 - R300 for box of 30.
 
Are you getting enough sleep?
For me lack of proper rest and stress aggrevates a hay fever attack.

Agreed, my missus insisted I see one and it was so worth the expense. My allergies for the past few years have been almost non-existant.
 
My mom has the same.. allergex just doesnt work anymore..so the doctor prescribed something called Loratadine. For her this worked like a charm. No more allergies or hay fever .

I hear good things about this Telfast 180 and Demazin NS (apparently expensive!). Although it seems like different tabs work for some but not for others. I wonder if it's a case of trying them all and see what works. The Texa 10 I'm using now also contains the antihistamine Cetirizine HCL. It worked well last year, but this year it's a bummer and I've used it since end of August to build up :confused:

tried demazin NS when they came out - useless - eat them like smarties :(

So far we have
  • desodene
  • Nexomist n.spray
  • Allecet
  • Telfast 180
  • Larano
  • Sinutab (with codeine)
  • Fexo 180
  • Becleate n.spray
  • Loratadine

Telfast 180 seems to be the main one.....still cheaper than the injection over a 3 mnth period. Either this or I must spend the bucks and see a ENT specialist
It does seem that what works for one doesn't necessarily work for the other.

Seriously, go and you may well kick yourself for not doing so earlier.
 
anti histamines make me feel weird and dizzy (both 2nd and 3rd generation)

I have tried Loratidine and Xyzal.

My doctor told me that the best thing for hayfever are locally applied nasal sprays (these dont enter the blood stream, so you have less side effects)

He prescribed Flixonaise, but I had a massive hayfever onset right after use (tried it twice).

Lol! So that actually made it worse.

Guess you just gotto find a product that works for you.

Flixonaise is a synthetic steroid which takes some time to work effectively. My ENT gave me a fast acting antihistamine to bridge the gap until the spay kicked in.

Me too. I have a wonky heart, most AH makes you sleepy so they put in junk that makes your heart beat faster to keep you awake and that makes me feel worse than the hayfever.

I currently use Sudafed ( its more for sinus but it somehow helps for the hayfever) I can only take half a tablet though.

What does an ENT do. I'm currently at a point where I think all doctors are Qwaks and they just guess and poke at a problem till they get the right reaction.
 
My brother starting using Beclate nasal spray ages ago and everyone he recommended it to loves it. Available at any chemist, o prescription, decently priced, no weird side effects.

I was the same, Telfast had no effects of drowsiness.
I still use Flixonase once in a while, works good. Hard to get hold of coz you need a script.

Ear nose and throat specialist.
It all links up, the ENT fixes it.
If you luck he gives you cocaine spray... :)
 
beclate aquanase morning and night, plus half an adco-cetirazine in the morning, every day.
ado cetirazine does not make you drowsy nor keep you awake or anything weird.

the problem with some people is that they sinuses are not too bad ...while others are bad

and for me i get used to every different tablet i have ever tried over the years

and then it does not work

i used to use polaritaine (not sure of the spelling) but it worked brilliant but then it was banned cause was a steroid

for me the normal histacon and histamed works well

/typing while sniffing :D
 
Lazarus strikes again!

I got rid of my hayfever! no more pills / injections / runny nose / watery eyes etc. for nearly 13 months now so I thought I'd share it here - maybe it helps someone?

even my Dr is amazed!

a simple flushing method nothing new - although I have tried it in the past before with no positive effect, but as I wanted to do my flight training I really needed to stop all medication and having watery eyes & a sneezing attack while flying could be detrimental to your health!

got a hayfever attack while at the club (standing on grass) and when I got home in desperation I flushed out my nose with cold water. then used some Bactroban cream and an ear bud to spread cream inside my nostrils. this helped quite a lot.

so I got into a habit of deep flushing my nose in the morning and spreading Bactroban cream inside. eventually I stopped the cream but continued with the deep flushing using a baby nasal suction bulb I bought from a chemist, by deep flushing I mean your nostrils must be "squeaky" clean - no mucus slime left in the them!

why it works I don't know except this method works for me, got my pilots licence and I'm still hayfever free to this day.
