HD 5870 OR GTX 295

Hi does a HD 5870 beat a GTX 295?what gpu would you recommend?

I am not sure about performance but I pretty sure the 5870 beats seven shades of ****e outta the 295 in price?
 
I would recommend the ATI card, because it performs the same as the Nvidia, and it also has dx11. the ati also has 1/2 the power consumption and is A LOT cheaper!
 
sometimes it does, sometimes it does not....and sometimes they both lose to the 4870X2.

i'd say buy the 5870 - purely because it's cheaper than the GTX295....who cares about 5-10fps when it's rendering away at 120fps ?

it's got DX11 too - so when those new games come out, the GTX might render slower as well, putting the 5870 firmly in the lead.

also, it's very new so no driver optimizations YET.
 
5870

nVidia will have to respond to the 58xx series with price drops - they're simply not competitive with ATi on bang for buck ATM.

Yea but when it's rendering at 25 FPS, then 10-15 FPS is great.

If you can afford the 295 go for it but read my the guru review first maybe.

Keep can you show me some benchies of the 295 getting nailed by the 4870x2 please.

sorry - those were only 5870 vs 295 benchies (and it was actually in that "Nvidia needs a class action up its @$$ !!" thread)

Zenbaas posted a link to good benchies, and thats where i saw the 4870x2 beating the GTX295.

The 5870 also has way lower power consumption and more features. This is why I would choose a 5870 at the moment. nVidia will have to drop prices very soon in response so if you really want nVidia, just wait a few weeks.
 
Yea wow it looks like 4870x2 is still holding it's own, it thought the 295 nailed it guess not :D.

well all 3 of them are awesome cards, with the gtx295 at the top, 5870 in mid and the 4870x2 at the bottom.

but you gotta think of a few things though.
1) Price. that leaves the 4870x2 and the 5870 - GTX295 is out
2) Performance. 5870 & GTX295 win. 4870x2 out I guess..
3) Technology: 5870 wins - smallest die size, and DX11.
4) Upgrade-ability: dunno what power you gonna need for 2 x 4870x2's, or 2 x GTX295's, but 2 x 5870 is easily doable.

5870 wins on ALL 4 points.

well done! you've just reworded my post!

I'll call you copy of my post, and raise you details:

the new DX11 cards HAVE TO support tessellation, which is different from the old tessellation in the ATI 2000, 3000 and 4000 series because of the new demands. The new tessellation units must be able to render the polygons at a more demanding level, and must be scalable.

So what is tessellation? Well, it's basically a mathematical process by which you add more polygons (triangles mostly) to the structure. Basically you don't randomly draw polygons, but there's a pattern that go together which means it's less demanding on the hardware, therefor it can be done on the fly, so you have less memory and processing demands then if you just had a very high number of polygons. What this does is it makes your details and what not go through the roof! So if makes everything in your game look at lot prettier, and because there's dedicated units doing the tessellation, you don't lose much power. the idea is that you have tessellate all you want, but the more times to do it, the more it's gonna make your graphics card slow down of the FPS.

DX11 has also made the textures far more clear. I dunno about you, but sometimes when you looking at a wall close up, you see blocks (EG:Cod4). this is irritating to say the least. So they made the textures smaller, and they gave them better lighting effects (HDR). Which means prettier looking walls and other textures.

The other nice feature with the HD5870 is the eye-infinity, which basically lets you play the game on 2-6 different monitors. So if you have 2 monitors with the same res (lets same 1024x1280), you can connect both monitors to the ATI 5000 series card, and play on a screen with res of 1024 x 2560.

So basically, it would be silly getting a DX10 card, while dx11 cards are out, and nvidia should release there one in the next 3 months.
 
Pcint has the GTX295 at R5490 and some of the guys are atvertising the HD 5870 at R5100. So the difference is not so big anymore........

From a bit of a Nvidia fanboy, I will state, wait for the GTX300 range and compare then.
But If you want to buy now, it should be the HD5870.

Only thing is that the 5870 is supposed to be much cheaper than the R5000 plus prices. It should be around R4000. Also the drivers are completely immature ATM so expect considerable improvements in performance later on. As for the 300 range from Nvidia...I don't know hey....only time will tell.
 
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA i have no idea why this is making me so excited AND ABOUT TO EXPLODE WITH HAPPINESS everytime i read about the 5870 but i think its because NVIDIA is finally gonna get a painful raping! ok very graphic( no pun intended) but i lost all faith in nvidia. so far when i die i'm donating my organs to ati! SO FAR they deserve them.:p
