HD PVR 2 P - single lnb installation

Hi Guys

Bought an Ellies 4 way splitter as the 2 way was sold out and 2 f-type coaxial cables. Did the setup yesterday afternoon and worked a treat. Upgraded my HD PVR 2 and even recorded the footie! However this morning whilst showing my girlfriend my amazing feat of having saved us from paying for a second lnb installation everything seems to have gone horribly wrong. I was showing her that if we wanted to record something on BBC E or Crime channel then signal gets lost for the other channels. However I have now lost complete signal to all channels. I stopped the recording. Reset the PVR but nothing. Put the original LNB into the box and it works but the new setup just gets the "check that your set-top box is properly connected to the cable point" If the problem persists blah blah blah. Anyone experience this problem? Have I somehow interrupted the signal? Should i call MC to reset my signal.

Any help would be appreciated as im walking around the flat(live in a complex) with egg on my face while my girl laughs at my silly attempt to beat the system.
 
The two cables coming into the back of the decoder from the splitter - try swopping them around, it helped me.

That is right. Check on the splitter. One of the 4 lines will be marked as the DC Pass line. Make sure this is connected to input 1 of the PVR. That might fix it.
 
Thanks guys. Did a reboot. Switched cables and it seems to be working again. One more question if you please. Last night I recorded Cape Fear. This morning i went to playlist and it only recorded 54 mins and there is an exclamation next to Cape Fear? Also of the 54 mins it recorded there is no sound? Thanks guys I really appreciate taking the time to help out.

the exclamation point is warning from the decoder that ther was a problwm while recording in your case it got cut of early, probaly since it lost signal for what ever reason
 
Maybe you changed the viewing channel to a different polarity, causing the recording to lose signal... Were you watching other stuff at the time?
 
The problem with this installation as apposed to the dual lnb is that sometimes you cannot record another channel if it's polarity is not the same as the channel you left it on - eg. if i want to record somthing on channel 123 and leave it on 170 and goto bed - it doesnt record! I have a place autotunes before the any program starts, it then tunes to that channel and will record etc. a pain but so be it.

Yeah, I've been cheap.

I have mostly tried to install my DStv myself. Since I moved to my current residence, I installed the dish, routed the cables, and positioned and calibrated my dish myself.

However, when I recently decided to buy a HD PVR decoder (ended up with the HD PVR 2P, couldn't find a four tuner), I was lucky enough to come across this particular thread about how to use your single LNB to use HD PVR.

I experienced both the single LNB (no splitter), and one day later got the splitter... and got exactly what this thread had said I would get.

Thank you. I love it when technical opinions actually ring true.

So since I'm now on a single LNB split to my HD PVR, and I can only record channels on the same polarisation as the channel I am watching... I will bite the bullet, and pay for a proper twin LNB unit and cables to just make it easier to record anything I want to record, at any time.

Hi Tim182, thanks a lot for your post. I recently purchased an HD PVR 2 decoder and only have a single LNB in the complex where I stay. I purchased the 2-way splitter and 2x 1m coaxial cables today, wired it all together and now I can record and can access the TV guide properly. Awesome! :)

The cable, splitter and two of those connectors for the ends of the coaxial cable cost me R92 from Builders Warehouse.
 
The only excuse for using a single feed is if you live in a complex.

Why? You might be watching a movie on MM1 and you might want to record Top Gear on BBC at the same time... but you cant, because you were to stingy to run a second cable and buy a twin LNB.

Where u get the twin LNB for R299, everywhere ive looked its R499 :(
 
LNB prices are lower than ever. If you pay more than R250 you are being ripped off... Even R250 is a bit of a rip off...

Hey dude

I'm not sure if you sorted your problems out but I thought I would share my solution which no one knows about on here I take it since no one mentioned. And let me clarify that I have full functionality as if I had a dual LNB installation done and have had no hassles since 4 months ago when I got the HD PVR.

Firstly, I had the exact same issues as you described. All I did was...

Buy a 2 way splitter... HOWEVER, my splitter is a powered splitter so I plug the cables in like you did but I have a plug which goes connects and boosts the signal to the two LNB's connected to the back of my PVR.

So due to that, both my tuners have nearly 100% signal strength. It's flutters on the 97/98% mark and I can record any channel. Don't have to worry about all this polarization nonsense and my tv guide works! Lol. Seriously, it works as described by multichoice.

So try get a 'powered 2 way splitter'. I live in Cape Town and purchased it from Zakspeed Electronics if I recall in goodwood. If you are in Cape Town, head over there and buy one, it's well worth the R300 bucks

Dude... Sorry to burst your bubble. It's impossible to get a full working solution from a single LNB. Put your viewing channel on M-Net. Now try and record any BBC channel or something like the Crime channel. Doesn't work, does it?

His splitter its so powerful it simply converts horizontal to vertical, I think we shall call this the "Chuck Norris splitter"

I just did. Tried the combinations you mentioned. Worked perfectly. So sorry to burst your bubble but check your facts next time.
