HD ready or HDTV

1. No of vertical lines = horizontal resolution
2. No of horizontal lines = vertical resolution.
3. 720p is specified at 1280x720 pixels. If only the vertical resolution is used, then someone could say that 640x720 resolution is HD.

i.e. 1024 x 768 is not HD.

I think we are missing each other here...

All my comments are with respect to what defines an HD Ready TV (the TV or display).

I agree that HD source material must be at least 1280 x 720, but an HD Ready TV/display) does not have to have 1280 horizontal pixels...

The spec says that the display must have a native resolution with at least 720 vertical lines in a wide aspect ratio. So, on the 1024x768 screen, it can display more that 720 vertical lines with a 16:9 ratio as the horizontal pixels are not square.

That is why the 1024x768 plasma screens may be branded as HD Ready.

Why not? If it doesn't, then it cannot resolve the same definition that is defined as HD and hence is not HD-Ready (no matter what the marketing gremlins would like us to believe). You can't throw away a fifth of the horizontal resolution and still claim HD. So it may have a label that says HD ready, but it sure as hell isn't.

"HD Ready" used to imply that the monitor was high resolution with the difference between a HDTV and a "HD Ready" TV being that the "HD Ready" TV didn't include a built in digital tuner (see the now dated 2005 "HDTV Ready vs. HDTV" Engadget article). Nowadays a TV displaying the "HD Ready" logo only guarantees the TV is capable of accepting a HDTV source and provides no guarantees as to the output (as stated in removed wikipedia section "HD ready: HD ready caveats").

Although things have gotten better, many of the locally sold plasmas that display the "HD Ready" logo only support output resolutions of 1024x768 and sometimes only 852x480 (i.e. 480p) :( Neither of these resolution qualify as HDTV.

Whatever you do, when looking for a HDTV, check the resolution. Although TV's brandishing the "HDTV ready" or "HDTV compatible" logo may support 720p and 1080i input, many have a lower then 1280x720 output resolution and they'll scale the picture down to their native format (which may be as low as 480p).

:D I'm just stating what is defined in the HD industry standards.

I understand your reasoning though...

Personally, I won't avoid a 1024x768 plasma because of it though... there are fantastic plasmas from Pioneer and Panasonic with those resolutions which blow 13366x768 LCDs out the water... I'm not saying plasma is better than LCD or vice-versa, but the 1024 horizontal pixels doesn't mean it won't display a great HD picture :)

Don't worry, I have not been fooled by any advertising - I have always looked at the actual native resolutions :D

I have read about that too... AFAIK, SD TVs that can display HD input signals should be referred to as "HD capable".

I have been referring to the European HD specs...

HD Ready refers specifically to the following with respect to the Display:

The minimum native resolution of the display (e.g. LCD, PDP) or display
engine (e.g. DLP) is 720 physical lines in wide aspect ratio


Ps. I don't own an HD set... so I'm not trying to defend my own purchase ;)

Well, its not necessarily junk... Resolution is obviously not the only criteria for choosing a display... I'd rather have a high-end 1024x768 display than a poor quality 1920x1080 display.

With the intention of DSTV only broadcasting 720p, it may be a waste of money going full HD for people who only want to watch HD TV (not connect a PC or similar).
 
Right. I am going to use it for the Pc BTW... and I havent heard anything bad about sinotec really, so i'm going to get the 42" Monster...
 
852X480 is EDTV (Enhanced Definition), and is not high definition. Merely 480p. These standards are relative to plasma tv's in any case.

I think this thread is getting stuck on pedantics. 720p is 1280X720, and is HD format. 1920X1080 (1080i and 1080p). In between resolution sizes, such as 1366X768, are still high definition. These standards are relevant to LCD technology BTW.

Plasma tv's, to remain significant in the HD age have seen marketers harking on about 1024X768 native resolution being HD ... shame ... you are the weakest link ... but it is in fact only for PDP (Plasma Display Panels) and is also known as XGA. In other words, 1024X768 (16:9) is 720p for plasma tv's ... dankie ... amen ... Full HD plasma native display is 1280Ă—1080 (1080p)

In my opinion, if you have the dosh, buy a full HD LCD display. For the rest of us, 720p does just nicely.

maestro : I think you've find that if you do the maths.. 1024x768 is 4:3 and not 16:9.... so its the incorrect aspect ratio.

That is the standard for PDP, and that is what is regarded as 720p. And thats my point!

No.. its not regarded as 720p as 720p is defined as 1280x720... and is in the 16:9 aspect ratio.

Would you like the wikipedia link that defines the resolutions that 720p - 1080p etc etc are defined in?
 
Well ... schwell ... that is the HD ready standard when you buying a plasma. I still maintain that this is relevant to PDP technology.

I stand by it ... so lets move on.

Wide (W)XGA purports 1280Ă—720 and is a non standard resolution derived from the XGA (1024X768) display standard. In other words, it widens the aspect ratio of the original XGA standard. Therefore, HD as is present in LCD technology, supports 1280X720 as 720p tech. Plasma's are different, due to history and differing manufacturing process.

1024X768 is non-square and is considered HD ready in plasma's.

I won't let this reflect my "lack" or "possession" of maths skills that you seem to harp on.

Dude, please read the whole thread properly :rolleyes: ... this has been explained in DETAIL!

1024x768 content is not 720p - nor does it have a 16:9 aspect ratio, but a 1024x768 plasma display with non-square pixels can display 720p content (1280x720) in a wide aspect ratio (not pixel ratio but the ratio of the viewable area).

I have read this whole thread properly.. and I am sticking to my guns on this... regardless of whether the pixels are square or not... a 1024x768 display CANNOT display a true 16:9 image, or a 720p image without downscaling it therefore it is NOT an HD display in any way shape or form.

I agree completely that a 1024x768 display cannot display 720p (1280x720) source without scaling it.

But, according to the HD specs, it is still a HD ready display as it has 720 or more vertical lines and can display a wide screen image.

If your interpretation of an HD display is that it has to be able to display a 720p source without any down scaling then that is different to the industry.

A question - Does a native 1366x768 LCD do any scaling to the 720p signal?
 
Yes, but if it's in the 16:9 ratio, it's 16:9.

Here are example of 2:1 resolutions

20x10
40x20
30x15

Even if it stretches, as long as it gets stretched proportionally it's ok.
 
There is no interpretation of what a wide screen image is... it has an aspect ratio of 16:9.. which the 1024x768 display does not have...
