HD ready or HDTV

A question - Does a native 1366x768 LCD do any scaling to the 720p signal?
1366x768 monitors provide native 720p (1280x720) support. The area outside the 1280x720 is what's known as overscan and it's contents aren't displayed on screen. The reason why 768 vertical was chosen was that WXGA (Wide XGA) monitors had a 15:9 aspect ratio, in order to get this to support the TV aspect ratio of 16:9 they made it slightly wider resulting in a resolution of 1366x768.

As for the overscan, TV's need to provide this to maintain compatibility with pre-digital technology, old CRT TV's throw away as much as 3% of the picture edges. Overscan is not necessarily a bad thing as the unused capacity is usually used by the "Vertical blanking interval" which can also be used to carry data such as teletext and closed captioning.
 
There is no interpretation of what a wide screen image is... it has an aspect ratio of 16:9.. which the 1024x768 display does not have...

16:9 is just a ratio - it can apply to anything.
In the case of 720p source material, it is a ratio between the number of horizontal and vertical pixels.
In the case of the plasma display, it is the ratio between the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the displayed image.

So by your logic 386x4096 is also 16:9, just not square pizels?
 
No, unfortunately when you're talking about HDtv and the like, the aspect ratio means the horizontal pixels to the vertical pixels.

The aspect ratio is the ratio of horizontal pixels to the number of vertical pixels.. but then we've covered this already and greg_sa is just trying to argue semantics about this 1024x768 display being HD since it LOOKS like a 16:9 display.
 
I agree 100% with you - it's about the ralation to X and Y Pixels, which must be 16:9.

if the image can be stretched, that means that ALL Screens are 16:9. Simply just not true.

Yes, it CAN stretch it to that size - why does it do that? because it is not 16:9 !

Not stretched, scaled... so it won't look stretched to the viewer.

What Toxic was saying is that when people talk about HD TV, then "aspect ratio" means the ratio of horizontal pixels to the vertical pixels.

That means you end up with a stretched image, or letterbox. you are then simply viewing a 16:9 image, but on a non-16:9 Display(cause its stretched or letterboxed)

That is your interpretation... My interpretation is that a 16:9 display has a display area that has a 16:9 shape.
 
It needs the 16:9 shape AND the 16:9 pixel ratio.
 
Why are you harping on about my interpretation?

720p is defined as a 16:9 aspect ratio resolution.. and since you're talking 720 vertical lines, you will need 1280 horizontal lines to display in the correct aspect ratio...

There is no interpretation on this one at all.
