HD4850 vs 9600GT

I'd buy the HD4850 tomorrow if it wasn't for my doubts over the temperature that it runs at.

Is it a valid concern?

Depends. Concern over the card itself? Please no - it was made to run at those temperatures do not worry about that too much. The only concern you should have is the warm air that the 4850 drops directly into the case. Optimally you would want to find a way to get most of that hot air out asap just as the 4870 does it. Invest in a 120MM (or 2) to help push that air out, should not set you back more than R100 a pop.

Enjoy! :)

I'm also considering these two cards but now I see that I need a 450w powersupply so I have to factor that in as well :/

Is 350w enough ? I have a q965 Mb with the q6600 quad core 2.4 chip

I need to know what stepping that CPU is ... B3 or G0? How many (IDE/SATA) HDDs & RAM & (80/92/120MM) Fans do you have in this system? Then the crucial part, how old is that 350W PSU?

You can go work out how much power your PC needs by going here: http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

Nerf i think you inputted something wrong, i have the E8400 rig in my sig and the calc says i only need 464W so i doubt you would need more than that.

OK, anyone here cool enough to supply us with a chart from Cards good to worse, including a few rough prices?

Eg:

1) 4870X2 - R7000
2) 4870 - R3300
3) 9800GX2 - R6000
etc,etc ?

The calculator says I need 518w

Huh? How did you get to that? That is wrong.

+1

I overestimated his system with 100% TDP & 100% load and even a 20% Capacitor aging... and I got to like <400W

Ok, lets work this out. The calculator suggests that I use a 457W PSU (95% TDP&load; 20% Capacitor aging) for my pc. I have a 460W one at the moment so that seems to be most accurate. If I do the same for your PC I get 378W. So I can assure you that a brand new ~380W PSU will be able to power your pc without a problem. A 350W PSU that is already a year old is cutting it a bit fine imo due to Capacitor aging.

But there are still other factors that might just count in your favor:
-This was an overestimation. Estimation for High-End Desktop.
-Your PSU might not have aged that much yet. If it was not used ~50% of the past year (only ~10% Capacitor aging), then your system would run just fine with your current 350W!
-I assumed you have a "B3" stepping Q6600 CPU. This one uses more power than the "G0" stepping.
-Don't know what else...

But to be safe, rather get a new PSU.
390W R292.41 R321.00
400W R170.00
460W R375.00 R385.00 R409.37
500W R333.45

Henry made a thread about "Best graphics cards for your money" (or similar) which he updated quite regularly, although I don't think he included a ranking system :) Maybe use something like Tomshardware's GPU charts?

Side note: Make sure you get a good, brand-name PSU. A 500W cheapie PSU is not as good as a 400W Coolermaster/Thermaltake/<insert name here> PSU.

Yup so true beanie, i have a 550 watt antec true power and it runs a 9800gx2 and the rest of system. A cheap one would never do this.

Cheapest psu is a comstar 450watt psu for R130 from www.Zaps.co.za

Or even an MC 450w for R150 from bidorbuy

I actually wanted to start a thread about it to see if anyone uses it and got a bomb out...think i will now

My cheep 500w (R299) PSU is still running. +-2years
Specs:
gigabyt DS3, E6700, 4gb Ram, 5x 320Gb sata, 2x 500gb sata, sata dvd-rw, 8600gt and about 6-7 fans :D

What about:

HD4850 vs 9800GTX :)

Is that a closer comparison? Which would you take and why?

That was the focus of most benchmarks when the 4850 came out. It beats the 9800GTX and even the 9800GTX+ in most cases.

It's also cheaper than the 9800GTX so definitely the better card.
