HDD speed and boot time

I'm also not sure testing boot times on a virtual machine is not indicative of the performance of SSDs anyway. It's still all hosted on a normal disk-based host. Re-do the boot tests with an installed SSD.

The vdisk was hosted on a RAMdisk, and during all the tests the disk IO of HDD hosting the VM software was 0, and did not impact the tests....

Strange peter that anandtech says this:

Drives will get better and although we're still looking at SSDs in their infancy, as a boot/application drive I still believe it's the single best upgrade you can do to your machine today. I've moved all of my testbeds to SSDs as well as my personal desktop. At least now we have two options to choose from: the X25-M and the Vertex.

So why does anandtech only use ssd's now but you still think people should avoid them, guess you know better than anandtech eh peter.

Yet you say don't buy ssd's and anadtech only use ssd's now. LOL you fail bud. They are 100% correct a ssd drive is the best upgrade you could ever buy for your system, ssd stopped me going i7 because my pc is so fast i do not need i7 anymore :D.

so, taking you guys comments etc, an ssd should really speed up work for architectural design? Me dads an architect, and I got him a PC earlier this year, I under the asumption that more RAM would help got him 12GB's of it. now I'm thinking if I can maybe sell some of the RAM and get him an ssd he would see a good improvement. I've been shopping around and notice a plethora of ssd drives. which brand should I go for. Budget just about R2k if I manage to sell the RAM. any ideas guys?

That was kinda my point. If the disk IO is high, and the CPU is not a bottleneck then yes, SSD will speed it up. If IO is low, and CPU is high, then you will be disappointed with the results....

Damn, JUGGY! You got too much spare cash... that's a R10K drive! Adopt me and buy me one! :D

Ja, I got a good deal. Paid 3K for the 256GB and 1K for the 64GB.

Even the slowest SSD's are quicker than standard hard drives.

Ok, I did benchies with only HD Tune as I didn't have enough time. Will get more comprehensive tests at a later date

See, now that's the speed I want out of an SSD. The only thing that goes faster than that is an STD. :D

Lucky you. R3K for a 256GB!! From where? Was it new?

Ah, very nice. See, now at those prices, imagine if it was market norm. Then the smaller drives would be very well priced.

Brand new, 1 year warranty etc. They're exactly the same as the P256 from Corsair and have a 128MB cache. They're very, very nice.
