I have a very good data projector, which works fine - except - I have replaced my lap-top with a Dell, which does not have a VGA port. The projector only has a VGA port. How do I get them to communicate with each other??

If you're willing to wait then Ebay is your cheapest bet.

That said - I have one connected and it gives me not so great picture quality (looks like the colours are washed out/gamma too high).
Have ordered a USB 3.0 to VGA adaptor from Ebay to see if it makes a difference. If it doesn't I'll have to sell my VGA-in-only monitor and get one with a DVI input instead.

uhhhh... VGA is an analogue signal, HDMI/DVI are both digital. You'll need to encode the digital signal into an analogue one one way or another. However, if it is a new-ish projector the VGA receiver might be able to understand a digital signal and a straight HDMI to VGA cable will work, otherwise you need an encoder. The one Cynic linked to looks decent enough :)

I bought an hdmi to vga converter from Takealot a little while ago, worked so so

Ask someone who has a Frontosa account to get you a HDMI to VGA dongle.

Part Code H2V23C0

definitely this.. we use these at work and they work a treat.. it might also depend on your projector though.. they work with the range of projectors we have, so you may be lucky.. if you are in cape town, i have an account with frontosa.. pm me and ill place the order for you, and you can collect..

oh lol, just remembered something funny...the one adapter I have is full-sized HDMI, the laptop outputs from a micro HDMI port so if I don't have the micro HDMI to VGA adapter around, I have to plug a micro HDMI to HDMI adapter in then plug the micro HDMI to VGA adapter in and then connect to the projector :)

All a bit wobbly but still works. Make sure you get the right size adapter for your laptop HDMI port.
