HDMI to VGA

I've been looking for an HDMI to VGA converter/cable in Cape Town, but for the life of me can't find one .

My New laptop only has an hdmi output for my second monitor, but the monitor is VGA. Does anyone know where i can find one?

I tried HDM -> DVI -> VGA but that just doesn't work

I also phoned a list of companies to no avail. They all seem to be confused as to what i want, and once i explain they either say "not possible" or "no stock".

Its not possible to only use a cable, you need a proper converter
HDMI = digital only
VGA = analogue only

The problem is that HDMI is digital and VGA is analogue so you need an active cable

Please just take note that it is NOT suitable for watching movies or playing games, since its refreshrate is too slow.

I have a few colleagues who are using it for software development.

The best (but also most expensive) option would be to buy a decent 1920x1080/1920x1200 screen that includes VGA (D-SUB) & HDMI inputs.

Just a monitor with DVI and VGA will work... As DVI is HDMI without the sound... . You will have to fork out about R1000-R1500 for a 20"~21.5" monitor though

Quick update in case anyone is still interested.

I found an HDMI to VGA converter at http://cables.co.za/vga-to-hdmi-adapter.html for R330+VAT.

This worked for me once I edited the GPU config in /boot/config.txt, by un-commenting the following:
hdmi_force_hotplug=1
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=16
hdmi_drive=2

The above hdmi_mode value sets resolution to 1024x768 60Hz. Other valid values can be found at http://elinux.org/RPiconfig.
