Johannesburg - Motorists who warn other drivers of law enforcement operations ahead through flashing their headlights will be arrested in the North West, the province's public safety MEC Howard Yawa said on Saturday.

"Motorists who commit the offence during zero tolerance festive season law enforcement operations will be summarily arrested for defeating the ends of justice," he said in a statement.

Yawa said earlier in the week that law enforcement officers will be out in full force on all roads in the province "to sustain the momentum of the onslaught against crime and lawlessness".

The festive season initiative was launched in the beginning of October as part of the province's support for the Department of Transport’s national rolling enforcement plan and the SA police service’s "when Duty Calls" operations.

I don't know if this is even legal is it? As far as I am concerned flashing your lights serves the same purpose as the signs that say they are trapping. I suppose one could even argue that they did it by mistake (you were trying to clean your windscreen but pulled the wrong lever? :D).

I dunno... I don't agree with this... your thoughts??

Fine. These stupid idiots. How can they prove my intention? They can't. Great, so that's settled, next topic.
Don't flash your lights. Flashing implies repeated on off on off action, so rather turn them on and then turn them off again 4 seconds later - that's it.

So are you for or against headlight flashers being arrested? Can't quite make out from your post?

Do excuse me - it is after 2am after all... ;-)

Fine. These stupid idiots (law enforcement idiots like Howard Yawa). How can they (law enforcement) prove my intention? They (law enforcement) can't. Great, so that's settled, next topic.
(Let's just stop) ""flashing"" our lights. Flashing implies repeated on off on off action, so (let's) rather turn them on ... and then turn them off again 4 seconds later - that's it. (This way nothing was flashed, and everyone is happy, lol)

I'm all for arresting people that "defeats the ends of justice". I just don't see how warning others constitutes defeating the ends of justice? Now you want to tell me that "flashing of lights" is now all of a sudden seen as defeating the ends of justice? That is like beyond retarded. The line of thought is so screwed it ain't even funny. Flashing lights > warning other people > defeating the ends of justice > arrest... Whats next? Flashing hazard lights > possible paedophile/gang signal > legal mumbo jumbo > arrest?

The main problem is that they do not know what my intention was. Flashing lights > new-car-syndrome causing pressing of random switches > defeating the ends of justice? > arrest?! Ha, whatever.

My mom flashes her brights at people that don't dim for oncoming traffic, and she also flashes her lights at people not using theirs during inclement weather. Wonder how long it's going to be before she's arrested/fined for trying to get someone to turn on their lights when she's just passed a hidden trapping spot...

The pigs do a wonderful job of hiding while speed trapping, so it's impossible for you to have seen them, so there's no way that you could be warning oncoming motorists about them, just casual greeting of other motorists.

The dirty scumbags don't have time to track down real crims, but have time to police this BS ??????

bloody hell! I always do it after I drive the wife's car....they should just do their job properly ...

Can someone explain to me how getting a traffic fine a month after your festive season road trip/holiday makes the road safer. More of a nuisance. I'd rather be pulled over and given the ticket, most likely affect the way I drive the rest of the trip.

Sure thing arrest the headlight flashers whilst the murderers and thieves roam the streets FFS!! Sometimes I despair of this country!

Its not illegal to flash light, this crap was tried before and there are many high court Judgements that say is not illegal. If you are arrested sue the bastards immediately, dont wait for outcome of the stupid charges they brought.

Lol, these people can be so retarded sometimes. They can't arrest you for shyt.....

Speed trapping is suppose to deter speeding not hitting coin out of people speeding. If I flash my lights at traffic approaching a speed trap then I serve the purpose the traffic police is suppose to do, STOP THEM FROM SPEEDING !!!!!!. The traffic department in SA is only out to make as much money as possible. They don't give a flying fark about the people dying on the road. If they did they would be visible when trapping and not hidding behind bushes.

This is more than likely yet another attempt to deflect our attention away from the real problems on the road.

The government is getting really good at this....

Hold a sec, the traffic police don't look for murderers...or do they? lol

Load of bullcrap btw.

Pigspotter says:

RT @BronwynneWiehl: RT @News24: Headlight flashers to be arrested http://n24.cm/dyO3XQ ••• This is not prosecutable in a court of law. They cannot prove that you had knowledge that the oncoming vehicle had the intention of speeding. If they arrest you and take it to court, you can counter sue for unlawful arrest. There you go MEC Howard Yawa, your move.

Why don't they control the taxi's for blowing there hooters all the time and stopping anywhere they wish

When the Minister was interviewed on Morning Live on this subject, he said that motorists who flash others are preventing the police from stopping and arresting thieves and murderers...I kid you not!

Because that would take (a) effort (b) actual will to control lawlessness, neither of which the ANC, and hence the police, have.

As much as I agree with officials being useless at best.. people who flash lights (warning others of traps) should be fined
I don't believe that we need to be warned .. by road signs.. that they are trapping... just obey the law... like it or not.

Maybe if we behave.. there won't be anything else for them to do .. except clamp down on taxis...

Makes you think.. if you think

I would disagree with pigspotter, by flashing your lights you are breaking the law by informing the oncoming driver of police activity, this is a crime.
Interfering with an officer in the course of his duties or Defeating the ends of justice.
This is even worse if it is a roadblock
I would love to hear from an attorney on this

If I met you at a garage on the very road they were trapping/roadblock and told you there was a roadblock/trap 3km down the road would that be ok?
