Heartbroken Microsoft dev weeps about Xbox One "cave in"

The one commenter made a good point:

Lost all sympathy for this guy when he started complaining about used games. $60 first sale isn't enough for you? You need to leech off of second hand sales, too?

The solution to the used gaming "problem" is to make games that people don't ever want to sell. For example, I'll never part with Oblivion or Skyrim, because those games have endless replay value.

Yeah, I stopped taking him seriously when the started justifying not allowing people to swop or trade their games. Its the fact that people can go to a video store and rent games that makes their console popular.

The way I see it the more money for devs the better the games. But that said to use Xbox One with the old policies would require a 20mb connection at least. Imagine how long it would take to Download a 10gig game on a 1mb line

Yeah I also lost sympathy for them at the used sales part.

None of the publishers have ever given us figures to prove how bad used games are for publishers - I doubt they are as bad as they claim. Just like piracy, the industry needs a scapegoat to pin its failures on. Of course, its easier to blame used games than it is to take responsibility for how you run your company.

Also, its an interesting example of externalizing - used games affect them, so they claim, so they make it our problem. They want to restrict our rights to resell property, because its easier than fixing their business model.

about 12 hours or so. so you'll just have and always on xbox with always on DRM. :D

of course if you the customer says we HATE always on DRM and your main competitor announces theirs doesn't have it then what has to happen? especially when you hoping customer are going to fork out US$100 more for your system.

We have 48 million Xbox 360 users connected online nearly 24 hours a day
From the article.
As of December 2012, there are nearly 2000 games available through Steam,[5] and 54 million active user accounts.[6] As of January 2013, Steam has seen over 6.6 million concurrent players.

Calling BS on that claim of his.

While publishers have never come right out to us at MS and say “We want you to do something about used gaming”
So your customer is the publisher and not the person buying your console.

The used gaming industry is slowly killing
The money the first buyer handed over is to rent a game and not actually buy anything.

Videogame development is a loss leader by definition
Another BS claim, if it was then no company would be able to survive.

unlike other forms of media videogames only have one revenue stream and that is selling to you the gamer
Really so what is the monthly fee that online games charge for e.g WoW.

Anyone who you deem to be family had access to these games regardless of where they are in the world.
So first you complain about used games now you give the ability to share a game with a multitude of people.
Oh wait but this is not a true sharing of the game it has a time limit and you are considering a limit on how many times others may access it, so a demo in any case where you are pushing the distribution costs onto the end customer.

Each Xbox Live account would have a full “home space” in which they could post their highest scores, show off
Hope you paid steam a chunk of money for using this idea of theirs.

Is this guy really a developer or is he a paid shill.

Suril is a scientist, journalist and obsessive Microsoft observer. He holds an advanced degree in Biotechnology with minors in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology. Send him tips on twitter: http://www.twitter.com/surilamin
Guess that answers my question, not a developer but a paid blogger.

It sounds like Suril didnt write this piece though.

When your family member accesses any of your games, they’re placed into a special demo mode. This demo mode in most cases would be the full game with a 15-45 minute timer and in some cases an hour. This allowed the person to play the game, get familiar with it then make a purchase if they wanted to.

So family mode wasn't really meant for sharing your games with your family, but just another MS marketing gimmick?

We didn’t do a good enough job explaining all the benefits that came with this new model.

So trying to extort more & more money from us is a 'benefit'?

So glad Sony shoved their less restrictive PS4 up your MS ass!

Microsoft should of given customers an option to choose which format they want to use, each has it's own pros and cons

this is pathetic, sorry. so family sharing was only a demo! its nice to be able to play demo's, but why not just access this from xbox live. why are you only restricted to friends and family?

Actually that makes family sharing even worse than I thought it would be. I thought you could share the whole game, turns out you cant even do that.

MS offered a lot of negatives with their new model, and no positives.

Oh in that case F%$K Microsoft

Imagine if Ford brought out a new car that can only run on a new Caltex Syn Fuel and that you can only trade back to the dealer you bought it from if you wanted to sell it. Furthermore - for safety reasons the car is configured for the driver when you buy it and can not be driven by anyone else. Ford's safety system also contantly transmits data to their central system that uses the data to customise your service intervals and calculate your insurance premium. Oh - and the new fuel does not really improve your performance or effiency.

Anyone buying this?

Has Microsoft never heard of the term "OPT IN" ? They could and probably still can , offer these things as value-added "features" which are OPTIONAL . Kinda like selling a game in their store for cheaper but then saying "it is cheaper because you need to authenticate online and can't resell it, however you can share it with your family" OR "you can go buy the disc, but it will be more expensive...your call".

Am i the only one with business logic here? If they truly believe it's the future and gamers will love all this so much (and they just don't know it yet), why not phase it in ? Let gamers decide for themselves.....instead MS took it upon themselves to make it a requirement and force it upon everyone...THAT is the real mistake.

It's quite possible the paste in story is false.

Aaron Greenberg has tweeted that there weren't ever plans to time-limit Family Sharing. It was always unlimited, he said.
