Hi all

I just tried cancelling my MTN contract before the due date.

My contract has 4 months left, my monthly line rental with data etc is R399. I called to get a figure that I can pay to terminate early. They quote R3k ! The sum of my leftover monthly charges would be only R1596.

I thought the CPA would have covered this - how can they hit me with almost R1500 in penalties for cancelling? by letting the contract run its course the device would be paid off in full.

Their agent says its 'per their terms and conditions'

Anyone else experienced this?

Ask for a break down.

From what I recall, they can charge you current fees+settlement of previous and one month additional. And whatever is left owing on the device divided by the term of the contract. Keep in mind MTN billing is always over a month in arrears.

Four months I would just wait , you not going to benefit by cancelling early.

*edit* mybb did a decent breakdown a few years back

Thanks I have asked them to send me a breakdown.

I also got a settlement figure for a 2nd contract. Contracts are almost identical in every regard, but the figure was R1400. So the calculations are different it appears.

The thing is the way they have been treating me in the last week, the half hour wait to get through to speak to someone, the ripoff cancellation fee, etc makes me more determined to get out and never ever use them again.

Whilst the service fees would equate to the amount you have mentioned, you also need to bear in mind that there's a handset clawback....

Didn't they maybe throw the two contracts together for the first price?

Not according to the guy on the phone. Even if it was I would think that would be unreasonable but would accept it and move on.

Both brand new contracts. We had to move from Cell C to MTN as there was no coverage where we moved to.

You better of just finished the contract off.. Cancellations are a pain.. i went through it

Yeah you realistically can't cancel them. Too expensive.

Let it run & don't get the new handset @21 months else you're locked in again

Well thought I would report back on a stroke of luck I had. After resigning myself to the fact I would be stuck with MTN until March I got a call from their 'upgrades department'

Explained to the guy that I'm not interested. He gave me the option of 'upgrading' to a month-to-month contract SIM only. immediately jumped at the chance, which dropped the amount paying to them by half. Can now also just cancel and move to another network
