Hello there,

I came on here a while ago and got some great idea for a new pc at R10 000

However, with the news of games like GW2 and Diablo 3 coming out next year only I decided to wait. My budget has grown in the time and I've put togethe an idea of what I can get for roughly R20 000

Any help on where I can improve, cut costs without cutting performance, problems in my build etc would be greatly appreciated!

Here is my specs:

Drop the 1000w power supply and get a 750W rather.

Drop the 932 and get the HAF X rather, a little bit more but worth it

http://www.wootware.co.za/intel-core-i7-2600k-3-4ghz-lga1155-32nm-quad-core-retail.html 400 rand cheaper on the cpu
http://www.wootware.co.za/gigabyte-ati-radeon-hd6970-2gb-pci-e-desktop-graphics-card.html 500 rand off the gpu price

Wait for amd who release their cpu's in the next week and see if intel respond with a price drop, if all goes well you could pick up an awesome amd cpu and an awesome mobo for far less money.

Unless you plan on overclocking you may as well for the 2500 which is about 700-1000 cheaper.

WHY !?

Seriously anyone who spends 20k on a pc must have their heads read. You'd get better value for money at even 12K for longer vs 20K and how long it takes before it's old technology.

I would also drop the CPU to an i5 if this is only a gaming pc.

Plus get an 6950 and unlock it to be a 6970...?

And 16gigs of ram? I think 8 would be just as good, in fact it may be faster.

Where are you getting your items, because you listed quite expensive prices...

There is no need for a 1000W PSU for a single GPU.
You won't need 16GB of RAM or an i7 2600k either, since 8GB of RAM + i5 2500k would be more than enough for games.
The motherboard that you chose is also very expensive for a single GPU setup.

For a budget of R20k, you should really get an aftermarket CPU cooler - like those closed loop water coolers. eg. Antec Kuhler 620 or 920.

Also, 2x GTX560Ti's would give you a much higher framerate than the HD6970 would ever be able to give you.

Not that I'm a gamer but I would drop the i7 to an i5 2500k and RAM to 8GB, 16GB for gaming is overkill and wasted. At that point you've already saved yourself almost R2k.

I would think R20 k would get me atleast a 6990 or a 580 . At the least!!!

i7 → i5 + cooler i.e. CM Hyper 212+ / Thermalright MUX-120 / Corsair H60 water cooling
Z68 Deluxe → P8P67 / cheaper Z68
16GB → 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600 1.5v
1000watt CM SGP → Corsair AX750
CM HAF 932 → Corsair Obsidian 650D

;)

+1 for what PostmanPot said!

With regards to the HD6950 unlocking, I won't recommend that you try to fully unlock it. Stick with the default voltage and memory frequencies. You can still unlock like the shaders.

Only thing is the 932/x is far superior case. The lack of a side fan puts me off that corsair in all honesty.

The need for side panel fans is mostly a myth. At least for any single card setup.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but you were worried about putting a PCI card between your HD6970 and HD6990, scared that they'd "melt"...

PC paranoia. ;)

Eyefinity setup?

What PostmanPot said, plus I'd add:

Why not get 3x 24" IPS monitors? ... (you may even have to increase your budget a bit though :p)

Update:

Also, I won't recommend the coolermaster fans... the one I got on my aftermarket cpu cooler (hyper 212+) was rubbish! It would make one hectic noise, and if I spun it with my finger, I could feel the thing vibrate, and hear it if I stuck it to my ear. Absolute rubbish.
The fans on my Antec case were smooth in comparison, and the same size, so I ended up chucking it, and putting one of the Antec case fans on lol..

Yup with about 2cm gap between the two and about 100 degrees of heat coming off my 6990 i think i had every right to worry though, without a side fan my 6990 would over heat and fail i reckon. Under full load it runs at 90 degrees. So you think a pci card 2cm from 100 degrees will be fine? The poor pci card would have had the heat from the 6970 2cm away and then underneath the heat from the 6990 2cm away hahaha ya paranoia of note :D. I would imagine that would be more logical than paranoid but then again i am sure you have felt the heat a 6990 and a 6970 can produce when right next to each other right?

Melting was followed by a :D, have you felt the heat that comes off the 6990? That would have gone directly on the pci card, not to mention i was going to buy a 1.4k xonar which i never did but i would never in my life risk a 1.4k card with the kinda of heat those two cards produced.

The side fan is no myth, the 6970 is also a hot card that needs a cool breeze. Many cases these days have a side fan, i wouldn't buy a case without one actually. I measured the temp with my 932 with the fan on and with it off and the vga card ran hotter with the side fan not pushing in air for obvious reasons.

With respect, all I can say is that you're talking schit. :) I'm not even going to dissect your post and explain, perhaps someone else will.

I'd want a side fan if I had a multi GPU setup. For a single GPU I dont think its necessary. You might also need one if you have a single card and its long enough to block airful from the lower chamber into the upper chamber.

EDIT:

PostmanPot, I'd agree with killadoob. If I had a card that ran at 90/100 degrees, I wouldnt want anything sensitive just beneath it. Sound cards still do have processors on them.

Besides, all that fan noise wont help the sound card do its job. Sound cards are supposed to be isolated from case noise as much as possible.

So you have run a 6970 and 6990 together? Not sure if you talking about that or the below question :D. Tell me how many sides does a 6990 blow out air postman?

Come on now dissect it for me, so you think a side fan adds nothing? Pointless exercise?

How can you say hey man your talking shyte and then not back it up bud? We are waiting to hear why dude.

Anglacon the pci card was going to be 2cm above the 6990 which is even worse, it wouldn't have been underneath by the heatsink and the top of the card is frighteningly hot then with the 6970 it would have been by the heatsink of the 6970
