I would almost deem this as a latent defect on the previous owners part.

If you purchased the property, I would get hold of the transferring attorneys and inform me of this problem and tell them to get it sorted out (nicely at first) and then if no joy, threaten legal action against the previous owner.

This is his/her mess, not yours and you basically have no other remedy other than them sorting it out.

I'm not sure if you could take such a case to the small claims court.

There's your answer! Pay the thing, and take them(previous owner) to small claims court....blacklist them...etc...and let that run in background

Get the fibre installed and move on.

So vumatel finally gave me somwhat of good news Vox just has to place the order on same adress but with a A or B in address then they can do a new installation, but now vox says if they have to place an new order i wont qualify for the installation and activation promo lol headache

Maybe apply through a different ISP and list your address as xxx A as advised by Vumatel.
CISP and others also have free installation.

If Vox doesn't want to honor their agreement with you because placing another order will be difficult, you can just go to ASA and lay a claim of false advertising for funsies, switch to another ISP (CoolIdeas are er....cool) and I promise you they won't give you so many headaches that Vox has at this stage.

Easy to take an order/people's money, but then not willing to work with the customer to get the service up and running? Bad form on Vox's part.

Calling them dumbc...s and demanding they change their procedures is just asking for a hurting.

It is nothing short of being a dumbc for holding someone else accountable for an outstanding account. I cannot fathom how stupid that is. Just imagine walking down the street pass a pick and pay and the security stops you and demand you pay another customer's bill who walked out with their goods. Go and pursuit that customer and let me be.

I never said what they did was right. I suggested he be the bigger man and not "fight fire with fire". You get a lot more done that way, give the company NO reason to tell you to **** off (they do that with highly volatile customers screaming and name calling at them FYI) and since he has taken the higher road, when he does lodge a complaint with ASA/CPA or whatever entity, his hands are clean and they can't throw out the case based off of his demeanor towards staff. Plus, if press covers it, he won't look like a douche.

I get a lot more done by being nice and persistent and having manager after manager speak to me. It's not that hard, some people think i'm insane for continuing to push like that, but in the end it's worth it. The more companies walk all over their customers (potential or not) the more customers would leave. I don't tolerate it. *looks at Wesbank's privacy infringement*

Well you are effectively paying the bills for 60% of Soweto not honoring their agreements.. How stupid is that!

Stats made up on the spot of course..

Has this issue been sorted out?

My daughter is in a sort of similar situation. She is renting a townhouse where Octotel fibre is installed. Placed an order with Afrihost and received the router. Previous tenant had fibre with Vox as his/her ISP.

Tenant was evicted. The fibre line is still in the previous tenants name and according to Vox the account is up to date. They are unable to contact the person so that the line can be cancelled.

Why is the previous tenant still paying the account? Could it be that the service was transferred but botched somehow?

How can one get Octotel to activate or transfer the line for her?

It's going to happen more often. Fibre cable providers are not supposed to allow ISPs to hold the line ransom if previous owners default or cancel or whatever the case may be. That said though it also causes an issue where defaulters can just switch ISP and get the line back on a new ISP without settling old debt.

Back on topic though contact Afrihost and add a letter like B or C to the address number to trigger a new install. When they come and install let them take the ONT away if they don't want install a new ONT as adding a B or C letter to the address will trigger a new install.

Ok, thanks cavedog, lets see if @AfriMan can assist in getting this resolved.

Hi guys

I am hoping if anyone can help me:

I've been struggling now for 2 months to migrate to a place we're now renting.
But our ISP(Afrihost) can't go further because the line needs to be released by the prev tenants.

It's been back and forth with the ISP, rental agent and prev tenants etc and basically neither can/willing to do anything.

So now we've been paying around R4k pm for data which honestly doesn't last long because we're heavy users, hence the fibre.

The tenant has a cancellation fee (20k) on that line and isn't willing to cancel so that the line can be released because they 'can't afford to pay for it'.

I've asked nicely, I've pleaded and even threatened legal action. But no budge from the prev tenants.

So my question is, what are my options here?
From the posts above it was mentioned that we can just trigger a new install by adding an 'A' or 'B'.
But is this legal and won't we just struggle with Frogfoot once they come to install it and see that there is already a line there?

Rain 5G isn't in Cape town yet, and I'd rather avoid Telkom as I was stuck for months with debit orders long after cancelling.

@AfriMan

As I mentioned before and with Frogfoot I know for a FACT they allow multiple lines to the same property. Trigger a new install by signing up for a new packages from the Afrihost Website now. When you enter the address add a B lett to the house apartment number. When frogfoot come and install tell them to leave the existing box as is and please install a new ONT. They will install a new line and ONT and you be good to go.

Forget about the previous tenant. You are a 3rd party and his debt is none of your business actually so just do the new install.

No you can have multiple lines installed in the same property. @lightpixel even added a picture how it looks when you have multiple lines installed. The existing ONT just leave it as is. Unplug the power cord and leave it there. Use the new one and mark it if you want.

@AfriMan

This is a very tricky one. Some of the providers won't install multiple lines on a single property. If their technicians arrive and they see infrastructure (of their own) then they might cancel the order and request that the user upgrade or look at fibre to the business.

We can do our best to engage with the provider on your behalf. Ultimately, if the previous tenant has pulled a duck and doesn't reside there anymore, it would make sense for them to release the line so that someone else can pay them for service.

Please PM me and let me see if I can get hold of someone senior to see it our way.

Update on my issue:

So last week Monday I put in a new order for fibre and added a letter to the address as kindly suggested by @cavedog.
We called Frogfoot today to find out whether they have gotten the order and when we should expect them and was told that they have notified Afrihost a while back and put the order on pause due to there being a line already present at that address. *Neither Afrihost or Frogfoot bothered to let us know, so we spent the entire time thinking they would come within 2 weeks.*

In the end we had to tell them it's a 'different place', and will have to wait for someone to come here so I can explain the full story. But I fear they might not budge on installing another line here as they were very clear on the phone that they do not want to install another line at the same address.

At this point waiting is becoming quite an expensive option, and I'm desperate to get this done asap.
