We have smooth wall installed at the Office to monitor bandwidth usage. I accidently left my wireless connection & Bittorrent running. Nailed 6gigs today. 87% used today. The smooth wall does not measure wireless usage. Boss is on to the fact that the cap is nailed.

Allready changed wireless IP address. They are wanting to investigate, how do i pin it on Hackers.

Help needed, as i value my job and dont want to face the Boss.

Do i confess or never go back to the office.

I know its a IDIOT mistake. Still kicking myself.

Confess, apologise for the accident (I download at home and forgot the download manager on!), and offer to pay for additional cap on the business connection.

I cant confess as others do it at the end of the month, then sink the boat for everyone. Youtube & facebook already block for ages. Money is not the issue, its the stigma.

Confessing is the right thing to do. Torrenting away a large chunk of your employer's capped business package is tantamount to theft. If you have any work ethics at all, you should confess and tell your supervisor / HR it was an honest mistake and take steps to prevent it from happening again.

Agreed. And well said.

The fact that you need to even ask this question shows that you need some guidance and good advice when it comes to your business career.

I'm not trying to be funny, but the immature thing to do would be to run away. The mature thing is to admit it, pay for it and go on with business.

Do not make a mistake that you will regret later and will look bad on any reference you need for the future.

Your boss will appreciate your maturity in owning up and taking responsibility. Honesty is always the best policy.

I always save it for the last day of the month, at home time. With the torrent set to stop at midnight. So as not to use the cap of the next month. This was a minor oversite on my side with a huge consequence. My Boss is not technical, so he will not understand that i am using bandwidth that he has already payed for, but will lose anyway, when the new month starts.

He checks usage daily.

Just tell him that you will buy 3 or 4Gigs out of your own pocket as you used it up. And do apologize for that.

Find as many applications as you can which are full of viruses/spyware... (preferably download them with a linux/mac else you'll just get your pc infected, or at an internet caffe!)

Put the apps on a memory stick/cd/dvd and copy em all onto a work pc and run them, once the pc is infected so much it starts to crap blood, just point at it and theres your scapegoat! Just say it was a massive virus infection that downloaded/uploaded data.

I would apologize, but my Boss is not technical and will not understand the "that i am using bandwidth that he has already payed for, but will lose anyway, when the new month starts." argument.

I agree its the debate about morals. But it was a f up on my side.

No. What if it infect other computers as well?

You'll be fired in no time should you be caught out.

Then start looking for another job in the meantime if you don't want to do the effort.

Well if you confess your boss would trust you more.

Tell him you accidentally forgot to turn off a skype video phone call to your uncle in Australia or something.

Telling the truth is the quickest way to get fired, don't be a wuss. Tell him is windows updates or something you can blame on whatever operating systems your work uses. Just hope this isn't your boss checking up on your exuse...

sorry... I thought maybe you were mature enough to do the right thing here. I guess you are not old enough to hold down a proper job anyway. Probably better that somebody more responsible gets your job.

Understatement of the day - Just kidding ^_^

Dealing with a boss who is not technical is really hard, I know... The important thing is to let him know in such a way that will make him, or attempt to make him understand.

Depending on the type of person he his (nice/mean/airhead) will dictate the means by which you explain what happened.

You could start off with something like this "Every month we get X amount of GB, if we don't use this amount in said month we loose it, therefore its a loss, we lost money. However if we use all the allocated bandwidth by the end of the month then we break even and loose nothing. But I made a miscalculation, which I should not have. I admit that it is all my fault and I ask that it be taken from my pay cheque this month, I apologize for what I have done and will abide by any punishment that you decide I should receive. etc etc.

May work, may not. But will it be worse if they find out because you told them, or if they find out another way.

They banned Facebook, because we got capped about a year ago. Not because others were spending ours on the site.
