Help exeeded Office cap without permission.

Perhaps its time for uncapped/a bigger cap.

They should not be able to fire you for it, if you confess... but if they find out any other way. Fired.

My advice is like most, be honest and get on with it. Offer to pay for the cap you used. Be a man, stand up and your boss will probably be pissed off but respect you for it.

My boss knows I don't lie coz I have owned up to things I haven't needed to - serious or not so bad. For doing that, when I stuff up it's okay (normally). When skelm okes do such a thing and get caughty they get a beating (figuratively speaking) :)

sorry... I thought maybe you were mature enough to do the right thing here. I guess you are not old enough to hold down a proper job anyway. Probably better that somebody more responsible gets your job.

Do not get personnel. Cost is not the issue, just do not want to rock the boat for the others at work, that being my primary goal. As the boss will then lockdown all torrents, just like Facebook, which i never really go on, maybe twice a month from home.

They are the type that signed the ADSL contract back when it started, and never looked at it again or asked for the new packages for less.

Perhaps you can use this to your advantage by pressuring them into getting a better ASDL deal, since they see that their cap is running low it may be a wakeup call for them to get something better.

Just get downstorm if they do block torrents.

We do stream some video, but cannot pin it on that at the moment. It was a genuine error on my part, i am normally very fastidious with the torrent thing at work.

If you reeally don't want to tell your boss what happened you could pin the blame on a hacker?

Sniffed your wireless network and raped the connection...

*EDIT*

By the way... How much did it upload?

2gigs upload, thats what killed me. 4gig down, since lunch

Roadkill2, here is an idea: Buy your boss a biltong basket with a note, "I accidentally forgot my home downloads on and used the company cap. Will pay for bandwidth. Sorry! -Roadkill2".

By rocking the boat, do you mean you do not want to bring to his attention that employees are using company bandwidth for personal downloads? I think he knows that... Why else would he check up on bandwidth usage daily?

My boss allows our technician to come in on weekends at the end of the month to finish off the company cap, if the month ends in a weekend. Why? Because the guy asked nicely (and he sometimes has to upgrade servers/network over weekends).

Wow, you sound worse than Roadkill2. You guys make it easy for the rest of us to get promotions.

I'm guessing the upload is an abnormal amount if you compare it to your companies average upload. Thats a small problem because I can spot a torrent off a bandwidth log easily and I'm betting the IT peeps at your business will be able to do the same thing.

They could see the high DL and the high UL and come to the conclusion that it was a torrent that raped the cap.

Then all they need to do is a search on the PCs at your work for applications like Utorrent, BT etc, these apps keep a log of your downloads (unless you delete them ofc). Since there is no log of who used the data, going on what you said before about them not keeping tabs on the wireless then they will know that it was a torrent on a pc/laptop that has access to the wireless network which homes their search into possible even less computers... and maybe find a trail leading to you.

What I suggest is remove the torrent application on your pc/laptop and make sure the loggs are gone and the remaining folders. Your router may have an IP log but you said you changed your IP, so thats good.

Err... what makes you think the smoothwall doesn't track your traffic usage? Surely anyone who has the knowledge to properly set up smoothwall will be able to trace your activities anyway.

Anyway, even if they didn't, man up and confess that it was you. It's stupid to try and implicate other people as it could very quickly spiral right out of control. If you really want to go down the path of lying, say you left windows updates running - they'd eat a fair chunk easily. Oh, and if you do that, please go ahead and PM me your name so I know to never hire you ;)

edit: unless the smoothwall is on the physical LAN side of the connection and you're connecting directly to the router in which case O_o

Thank you :) but I don't work. I'm just good at masking "lost" bandwidth, been doing it for years now, never been caught... My brother also does it, I think it runs in the family xD

I'm also quite cynical, not much of a conscience here.

Will never live in East London, stick to the solution i asked. As i previously stated, i only download at the end of the working month, Boss never knew because the cap was never reached, but throughmy own fault the torrent downloaded at work.

Since you asked so nicely...

But I was kidding :) I mean I wouldn't hire you because you seem a little dishonest but that's up to your conscience, not mine :)

Anyways, I gave you a suggestion that doesn't require you to infect anything...

Infecting the office PC was never my thought, just thought that a wireless hack excuse will work, seeing as they cannot trace the smoothwall. I am actual very dedicated to my work and helping others, as my customers/friends can attest. Do not know where the smoothwall is running from, but know that my laptop was wirelessly connected. Junior techie said that wireless connections are not measured through smoothwall, he is also in on month end downloads. The junior techie is ythe only techie.

The virus route leaves traces and it would be a stupid thing to do, where as the hack route will point the other way. They tighten security and its better for us.

Yes but there are repercussions for claiming a wireless hack (at least if your IT is any good).

If the wireless is completely open O_o then it gets closed and you possibly get wireless taken away from everyone and smoothwall box is put in the right place to monitor all communications. If your boss gets serious, he could get a security company in and that could get hairy.

I'd still go with the updates thing honestly. It's semi legitimate and won't require any extra effort. Number one solution would be fessing up.

Thanks for the help, but our XP machines have been there since the year nought. The 17"crt is still burning my eyes, 3 years on! 478 chipset

Tell your boss to stop being such a tight ass, his profiteering (living off) from your daily labour - tell him this is Africa not China...
