I just received my Motorola Milestone with Android 2.1.

Since this is my first Android phone I'm struggling a bit to get to grips with everything. Any tips/advice and tutorials I could take a look at?

How do you close an application? It seems as if they stay active in the background.

Which places should I check to prevent it from using a huge amount of data? I'd prefer to do manual synching etc.

With Android there is no need to close applications. The OS takes care of that automatically for you. Some apps however do exit if you press back enough times (instead of just pressing home).

There should be a setting about syncing in the settings app. But, Android doesn't use that much data and automatic syncing is where half the power of Android sits (imo). Look in the market for a app called 'netbilling'. It tracks your data usage and allows you set a price per mb for it.

Apps:
Barcode scanner!
Taskiller

Check data in Settings->accounts&sync (and at least get an adhoc data bundle in case)

Apps stay active in the background until the memory is needed, then Android closes least used apps. In 2.1 this isn't done that well, in 2.2 it's done very well so that I don't need taskiller anymore.

There are other threads about what apps to get, check those out. There's some great stuff out there

Android uses a lot of data. I would definitely find the settings to control your data usage.

On the desire, you can add a Mobile Data widget (widget > settings > Mobile Data). You use this widget to switch on and of mobile data usage. The Power Control widget can be used to switch auto sync on and off, it also has a button to switch wifi on and off.

Not sure if these widgets are available on the Milestone, but look for similar widgets/apps on the phone, or look for then in the app market.

Thanks guys. Guess I'll have to learn as I go along. This should be on a TopUp contract so hopefully I'd be reasonably safe as far as data costs go.
