Hey guys, I need some Advice & Info

This weekend my foot started to pain badly - feels like a sprained ankle (but hurts more maybe)

I was told I just "slept with my foot wrong"

I now walk with a sort of limp :D

Today at work I just told everyone "I sprained my ankle" (As i've never heard of Gout) but now that my boss tells me Gout does that to him, and it won't go away unless you take pills

I'm not a pill guy - i'm almost never sick, so i need advice

- Is this gout ?
- do I actually NEED pills for it to go away?
- What pills do i need, and how much do they cost? are they available at my local pharmacy?

and also, what causes gout? diet?

It's ok to get some opinions here but you should still go to a doctor.

no hot throbbing pain - it's just when I bend my foot upwards? (like when your foot bends when you walk)

gout is caused by uric acid crystals forming in the joints and often affects the joints, normally fingers & toes. It shows as a red swelling. If you have gout you will not be able to touch the affected area, it would be too painful.

It is easily managed with colchicine and other medications.

Your description doesn't sound like gout.

Go see your doctor and get a proper diagnosis.

I tore my ligaments in my ancle 2 years ago and last year my ancle started paining again. The pain was so bad i couln't walk and it literally felt like i tore my ligaments again. Eventually i ended up going to the doctor (i first thought i was kicking the wall in my sleep) and he told me it was gout. I don't get it regurally - i've had it 3 times. the doctor told me i must watch my diet to see what causes it but i can't see whether i am eating anything different.

i know of a few people that knows exactly what type of food gives it to them and they are just staying away from that and they haven't had any problems since.

Not Gout - That sounds good then....I hope.

Has anyone slept with their foot in a weird position and it hurt for a day or two after (or more) ? I really don't like doctors and I usually stay away from Pills and stuff

I mean, is it possible my foot was bent in a weird position all night?

you need to get a uric acid blood test... go see doc, colchicine for an attack and anti inflammatory and there is medicine available to keep it away called puricos.

My doctor noticed high uric acid levels in some blood test results that he got, and immediately prescribed a generic form or puricos for me. He said that he is not going to wait for the crystals to form. He also said that daily excercise will probably do a better job than the pills, but that he wants to play it safe till the levels come down.

As a rheumatologist friend say. U dont die of gout, u die of the heart attack/stroke brought on by gout. Its quite serious and yes diet is a big factor.

Yup, doesn't sound like Gout at all....

Been there, done that and Gout is NOT pleasant... big wake up call to sort diets out and all that...

wtf is it then - has this happened to anybody else out there?

Well sleeping in awkward positions can cause some strain. I often wake up with a sore back, arms, neck or hips.

Again it's best to see a doc because you'll never know how serious it is until you do. At worst there will be a few minutes of pain for a blood test, but it's nowhere near as bad if you delay it and it turns out to be something serious.

go to a lancet or ampath lab, at hospital/clinic, ask for a uric acid test (R40 or so), ask them to send results to your doc, phone doc next day and he will tell you. I had it earlier this year, after my honeymoon, it usually shows up after overdoing it with alcohol and food... like a long weekend... after a few attacks it could cause permanent damage so you need to sort it out.

Damnit - I just remembered something! :(

my one finger is also swolen a bit - this started like on friday i think - not as severe and sore as the ankle/foot, but this makes me think now, because I also didn't sprain/bend it or anything weird, it just came

no redness on finger though...

now i'm worried

ok, like I said i'm not into doctors/etc - I don't even have a "personal doctor" that I know well like most other people but i'll see if I can get to a hospital / clinic soon.

I don't have medical aid so I hope it won't be too much :(
