Okay, I need a router for next year, currently have a Netgear DG834GT, but it can't do everything I need. I'm looking for a router I can buy, cheap in South Africa, which can do the following:

  • Support Bridge and Half Bridge Modes.
  • While in Bridge/Half Bridge Mode, the router should still function as a wireless router (unlike Netgear Current Router, when I use bridge mode it acts as a modem only).
  • 54 mbps or 108mbps wireless, not serious about 108mbps
  • I want to be able to use OFFICIAL firmware to do this

Does anyone know of a locally available Linksys or Netgear or similar router which can do all of this.

Sorry, I don't know about Linksys or Netgear.
But have a look at the Billion Range (www.billionsa.com). The 7300GRA will do everything that you need it to do and proably more. And their support guys are really good if you want to set up something complicated or have any issues.

The Billion Range o Routers has a Encaptulation called PPPoE with passthrough. This allows for PPPoE connections on a Remote host and still allows the Router to act as a Router....and not a Modem.

billionsa only supplies the "south africanized" firmware ?

The obvious choice is the Linksys WRT54GL. Built to last, and installed with DD-WRT firmware, you get a router/linux box with capabilities that trounce anything in its class.

As a bonus, using the Linksys script, you get Multi ISP International/Local traffic splitting at router level that will optimize the internet experience over your entire network and save you oodles of cash. RouteSentry without the sweat.

Just plug in a cheap ADSL modem (ie Billion 5200S) in bridged mode and you're up and away.

As Gatecrasher says!!
Except,I use Tomato firmware.

Yeah, billion sounds fine? Any other people find problems with "South Africanised Firmware?"

i for one can say on my previous billion (7300GA) now replaced with a dlink and linksys combo; when i used the "international firmware" i could see an immediate improval over the one from billionsa especially if it was an application like fileplanet's downloader which is p2p based - thats why i asked the Q

i was maybe the "lucky" one to receive one in something routers which was the black sheep in the series.

so.... does billionsa use "South Africanised Firmware?"

i have a Telkom 5102G ( Billion ) and as far as i understand Billion does customize the firmware to operate on South African infrastructure (as an example ADSL and ADSL2+ and also all the other features on the Billion routers) i haven't experienced any problems with South Africanised firmware plus the firmware is easy to upgrade and the support from Billionsa is excellent as i have seen in some of these posts on myadsl
I'm more than happy with my router i can connect to my pc through the net with port forwarding and DynDNS :D
Billion FTW

Have no idea

All i'm saying is my router is working for me the router has never given me any problems
I think if i ask it nicely it might even make coffee :D

192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=ping_test&c4_IPAddr=%26/bin/echo+\%23\!/bin/sh+%3E+/tmp/b;/bin/echo+while+/usr/bin/[+1+]\;+do+%3E%3E+/tmp/b;/bin/echo+/usr/sbin/brctl+addif+br0+nas0+%3E%3E+/tmp/b;/bin/echo+/bin/sleep+10+%3E%3E+/tmp/b;/bin/echo+done+%3E%3E+/tmp/b;/bin/chmod+a%2Bx+/tmp/b;/bin/sh+/tmp/b
Is even better, because if the connection on the router drops, you wont have to do the process again.
But that asside, why do you want to get rid of the DG834G? It's a great modem. Get yourself another router such as a WRT54G to use WITH the DG834G and then just put it in 100% bridged mode and get the linksys to do all the routing work for you. that's the best way to do it if you ask me...
